Five-year-old missing in Leipheim: Drama at the campsite ends happily
On Wednesday evening, a five-year-old girl went missing from a campsite in Leipheim, in the Günzburg district. She lost track of time while playing with her eight-year-old brother and never returned. After two hours of desperate searching, the parents saw no other way out than to call the police. They reacted immediately and started an extensive search operation.
How Mercury Reportedly, more than 200 emergency services were mobilized, including a police helicopter. The search was supported by the fire department and rescue dog teams. Particular attention was paid to the adjacent waters, where helpers from the German Life Saving Society (DLRG) and water rescue services searched for the child. The emergency services searched almost every corner of the area for hours.
A happy ending after a sleepless night
The intensive night search was finally successful. The girl was discovered around half past two in the morning. She had been sleeping in a ditch next to a dirt road, not far from the campsite. As the Daily Mirror reported that she was woken up by a loudspeaker call from the police. The child was tired but fortunately uninjured and was soon able to return to the arms of her worried parents.
Missing person cases like this are not uncommon in Germany. According to that Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), around 9,420 missing person cases were registered in Germany on January 1st, 2025. Children are often particularly affected. Around 18,100 children went missing in 2024, with 96.7% of cases solved by the end of the year.
The fact that the little girl is unharmed after this frightening but ultimately happy episode brings a sigh of relief to everyone present. This situation once again shows how important it is to be attentive and careful when children play and move around in unfamiliar environments. The officers and helpers on site prevented something worse from happening through their quick and coordinated efforts and can with a clear conscience be described as the heroes of the day.
