Standstill at the fire department: Unterpreppach is waiting for a new vehicle!
The Unterpreppach fire department is facing a major dilemma: Despite approved government funding for a new emergency vehicle, the process for purchasing it has stalled. On October 30, 2025, the Ebern city council made a fundamental decision to purchase a portable fire pump vehicle (TSF-W), which is urgently needed, but not much has happened since then. The tender for the vehicle is already out, but there is no further progress. Why isn't the fire department making any progress here?
The reasons for this standstill are varied. According to Fraenkischer Tag it is mainly due to administrative hurdles and a procurement strategy that has not yet been clarified. The relevant authorities apparently do not agree on how the process should be continued, which throws the whole matter into a tailspin. An award procedure was already being prepared parallel to the application for funding, but nothing concrete has happened so far.
Procurement challenges
The central procurement of fire engines represents a major challenge for many municipalities. According to Thüringen, many fire departments are in favor of centrally organized procurement. This would not only simplify the purchasing process but also improve coordination and communication between different entities. The advantages of this central procurement were discussed several times in discussions with the Minister of the Interior and Local Government. But so far there is a lack of clear concepts that would enable effective implementation.
Especially in smaller communities like Unterpreppach, it is often difficult to reconcile financial resources and planning. This shows once again how important it is that those responsible have a good hand when it comes to procuring emergency vehicles. If necessary, the fire brigade is the first instance in crisis situations and should be accordingly well equipped.
The standstill regarding the purchase of the new portable pump vehicle also raises questions as to whether the decision-makers in Ebern are offering sufficient support or whether more pressure should be built up here. Because without a ready-to-drive and modern fire engine, the operational readiness of the Unterpreppach fire department could be jeopardized, which would not be acceptable for the entire community. The hope remains that those responsible will soon find a solution to advance this important issue.
