New fire station in Oberostendorf: local council gives the green light!

At the most recent municipal council meeting in Oberostendorf, a groundbreaking step in municipal development was initiated. On July 18, 2025, the first change to development plan No. 21 was on the agenda. This is all about the “communal needs zone north”, which will not only include a building yard, but also a new fire station and sports facilities. Anna-Lina Risse from the planning office Daurer + Hasse presented this clearly.

There was a positive mood when the local council members unanimously approved the draft version. As allgaeuer-zeitung.de reports, there were no objections from citizens. This means that the plan now moves into the publication phase, where it will be presented for consultation and participation by the authorities and other public stakeholders.

Public participation

An important aspect of land-use planning is the involvement of the public. The Building Code (BauGB) regulates exactly how such planning processes must work. There is a clear planning law basis that applies to all federal states. The various requirements for building projects are set out in the respective state building regulations. One of the main regulations is the early participation of citizens and those responsible for public affairs in this process, which was also taken into account during the current planning phase.

As mittemachen-berlin.de explains, urban land use planning in Germany is a formal process that is essentially characterized by two phases: voluntary early public participation and the mandatory public interpretation of the plan for at least 30 days. These steps will help ensure that everyone involved is well-informed and able to provide their opinions before the plan is finally adopted.

Historical development

The roots of land use planning in Germany go back to the 19th century. With the introduction of the Prussian Escape Lines Act in 1875, communities were given the opportunity to actively shape their planning. Over the decades, the land-use planning process has been constantly adapted and refined. Particularly important was the introduction of early citizen participation in 1976, which represents an important milestone in the history of planning.

Nowadays, the development plan is a central element of municipal planning. As Wikipedia describes, this process of citizen participation guarantees transparency and gives people a voice when it comes to future developments in their hometown.

The decision of the local council in Oberostendorf is not only a step forward for the local infrastructure, but also a good example of citizen-oriented planning and local participation.
