Riedenburger Brauhaus takes silver at the European Beer Star 2025!
What a reason to be happy for the Riedenburger Brauhaus! On September 17, 2025, the company was again listed with the respected European Beer Star and won the silver medal in the “Alternative Grain Beer” category for its Historic Emmer Beer. This award not only represents a special triumph, but is also the second in a row. Last year the brewery was pleased to receive a prize for the Dolden Dark. Maximilian Krieger, managing director of the Riedenburger Brauhaus, was extremely proud of the renewed honor and underlined the brewery's philosophy: “Tradition, innovation and ecological responsibility” are the focus.
What makes the historic Emmer beer so unique? Emmer, a climate-resilient ancient grain, not only has taste benefits, but also ecological ones. The jury was impressed by the beer's chestnut brown color and harmonious character, which combines nutty and caramel notes. Another highlight is the non-alcoholic version of the historic Emmer beer, which will be launched in autumn 2024 and follows the trend towards enjoyable drinking even without alcohol.
European Beer Star: A tough competition
The European Beer Star is considered one of the toughest beer competitions in the world. At least 2,200 beers from 74 categories took part in this year's competition, which were judged by a 150-strong international jury of experts. Only the best beers in each category receive a gold, silver or bronze award. It is also this jury that organizes the competition according to an Olympic evaluation system, which means that the award-winning beers are considered the “stars among the beers”.
But it's not just the Riedenburger brewery that stands out with its award. The European brewing industry as a whole is diverse and dynamic. There are around 8,000 breweries in the EU, with France having the most, followed by the United Kingdom, which has the most breweries outside the EU. Particularly noteworthy is the growing interest in craft beer, which is producing innovative tastes and sophisticated brews. This movement is particularly driven by small microbreweries that offer creative and diversely flavored beers.
Beer culture in Europe
A look at beer culture in Europe shows how deeply rooted this drink is in society. Germany, Austria and Poland are among the main consumers, with each citizen consuming around 90 liters of beer annually. In the Czech Republic it goes even further, where consumption figures are around 128 liters per capita. The brewing industry is not only an important branch of the economy with a centuries-old tradition, it also has a significant influence on social life in many countries.
Overall, the European Beer Star shows that innovative strength and quality in the brewing industry continue to increase, even in these challenging times. With its silver medal, the Riedenburger Brauhaus has proven that local brewing is also internationally valued and recognized. So we can only hope that many more creative beers will see the light of day and delight beer lovers.
