Storm alarm in Bavaria: thunderstorms, heavy rain and hail are threatening!

A huge change in the weather is currently keeping people in Bavaria on tenterhooks. The German Weather Service (DWD) has sounded the alarm for parts of the state because violent thunderstorms with heavy rain, hail and gusts of up to 90 km/h create a potential severe weather scenario. According to current forecasts, Upper Bavaria and the neighboring regions are particularly affected, where the thunderstorms can cause significant amounts of precipitation and dangerous gusts of wind.

In the afternoon, the thunderstorms should arrive from the west, and locally rainfall amounts of 15 to 25 liters per square meter per hour are expected, in individual cases even up to 40 liters. This was also confirmed by other sources, where, among other things, up to 60 liters of heavy rain is forecast for Monday night. The weather not only brings the storm front, but also a noticeable cooling down, after the highest temperature of the year of 35.5 degrees was recorded in Kitzingen on Saturday.

Severe weather warnings are spreading

The severe weather warnings cover several districts, including Neuburg-Schrobenhausen, Augsburg and Dachau, and are valid until late into the night. The Mercury reports that the police in Upper Franconia have already been busy with around 20 missions, although fortunately no injuries have been reported. The heavy rain in Helmbrechts, among other places, led to a supermarket being flooded and having to be drained of water using pumps.

Rainfall of more than 40 liters per square meter has already been documented not only in Bavaria, but also in Saxony, Thuringia and Eastern Bavaria. Minor damage, such as uprooted trees and road washouts, also occurred, although overall major damage has not yet been reported. However, this could change quickly as the thunderstorm front remains active and could cause further damage in the affected areas, especially on Monday night.

A look at the weather map

The Severe Weather Center offers a comprehensive overview map of the current severe weather warnings in Bavaria, which covers various types of severe weather from storms to heavy rain and thunderstorms. Clear warnings are crucial for the population to be able to take timely action. There are two types of warnings: advance warnings and acute warnings. The latter signal that the occurrence of the natural hazard is certain.

Whether we learn from recent weather events or see them as warning signs, the fact remains that the weather service continually informs the population. With professional meteorologists and constantly updated forecasts, it is important to stay alert and adapt to weather conditions in good time.
