ATM blown up in Küps: Police are urgently looking for witnesses!
On Thursday morning, around 4 a.m., a spectacular incident occurred in Küps: an ATM at the Sparkasse Kulmbach-Kronach was blown up. The explosion occurred on Bahnhofstrasse, with a resident informing the police. Fortunately, no one was injured, but there was significant damage to the building, the extent of which is still unknown. The fleeing perpetrators escaped from the crime scene in a vehicle, which is why the Coburg criminal police began the investigation, supported by specialists from the State Criminal Police Office. The amount of cash stolen also remains unclear.
The police are asking for the public's help: Witnesses who saw suspicious people or vehicles during the night are encouraged to come forward. Information can be given directly to the Coburg criminal police on 09561/6450 or to any police station. This explosion is not the first incident of this kind in the region, as the [Wiesentbote](https://www.wiesentbote.de/2025/07/17/geldautomat-in-kueps-ge Sprengt-zeugnisse-erbeten/) reports.

Terror threat and trends in the region
The blowing up of ATMs is a worrying trend. According to an evaluation, over 80 vending machine explosions were recorded in Germany, Switzerland and Austria between May 2024 and January 2025. Particularly active regions are areas near borders and highways, which enable perpetrators to escape quickly. Germany tops the list with the most incidents – 50 cases alone, spread across 30 cities and municipalities. The clearance rate for all vending machine explosions in these countries is alarmingly low [Netz-Trends](https://www.netz-trends.de/id/4936850/Ausvaluation-zu-80-Automaten Sprengungen-in-Deutschland-Schweiz-und-Oesterreich-zwischen-Mai-2024-und-Januar-2025—Borderregions-und-Autobahnen-im-Fokus-der-Terroristen/) has found out.
The proximity to motorways and the weak police presence in rural areas appear to significantly encourage perpetrators to escape. The public is urged to be vigilant and report unusual behavior to stop these criminal activities.
