In Mitwitz, darkness has temporarily given way to a shimmering sea of lights, because on October 24, 2025, the long-term project “Upper Franconia shines” was launched with a festive opening ceremony. At a pleasant 8 degrees Celsius, numerous citizens from the surrounding area accepted the invitation to experience the atmospheric event. The event took place in the old school near the town hall and was accompanied by the musical sounds of the clarinet-guitar duo “Dav’ n’ mor’”, who ensured a good mood with their live jazz music. The guests were also warmly welcomed with a glass of wine, which perfectly rounded off the festive atmosphere. But that was just the beginning! The light installations can be admired every day until November 2nd, 2025 and transform the town center between the town hall, Upper Castle and Neuer Mitte into a colorful spectacle. Project manager Michael Müller guides visitors through these impressive installations, which impress with creative concepts and resource-saving illumination. The organizer, Oberfranken Offensive e.V., has been relying on sustainable lighting concepts for exactly 20 years and has teamed up with the Coburg Design Forum and the Coburg University of Applied Sciences to realize this festival of lights, according to information from oberfranken.de.
A colorful supporting program
The supporting program also offers varied highlights in the coming days. Historical castle tours in the Mitwitz moated castle are on the agenda on Saturday, October 25th, followed by an ecumenical light trail “Of Home and Houses” on Sunday. On Tuesday, October 28th, there will be a photo tour with Jürgen S Tauch and a night hike to the “Green Belt”. For music lovers, a concert entitled “Glücksbringer” with the group sing2music will take place on October 30th, followed by a ceremony celebrating “40 years of ecological education center”. On Halloween, October 31st, there will be a Dance4Fun event including a fire show in the Neue Mitte.
On the weekend of November 1st to 2nd, visitors have the opportunity to visit the rural craftsmen's exhibition in the Old School, which focuses on the region's creative work. Food and drinks are offered every day in the “Neue Mitte Mitwitz” and in the local inns, which ensures your physical well-being while the lights invite you to marvel.

“Upper Franconia shines” is not just a simple lighting event, but a symbol of creativity, innovation and regional cohesion. The project first found its roots in 2005 and has since motivated communities to develop resource-saving lighting concepts.
