Quality check: Steinbach's bakers impress with top-quality bread!

An exciting series of events for quality testing for bakery products took place in Steinbach am Wald today. A total of 13 masters from the Kronach bakers' guild and another master from the Coburg-Lichtenfels-Neustadt guild demonstrated their baking skills. The test stand featured magnificent breads, delicious stollen and the finest gingerbread, all of which were subjected to the new testing standard of the German Bread Institute (DBI). np-coburg.de reports that a total of 103 products were evaluated.

The day was characterized by high-quality baking and an expert jury consisting of head master Alfons Möckel, mayor Thomas Löffler, district master craftsman Heinrich Schneidert and the inspector Manfred Stiefel. The results of the test are promising: 49 breads were tested, and an impressive 49% received the grade “very good”. Three examples were particularly outstanding and were awarded the coveted gold certificate. Another 43% of the breads scored “good”.

Background to quality testing

The test standard according to which the products were evaluated was recently developed and certified by the German Bread Institute. breadinstitut.de emphasizes that this new testing scheme aims to better reflect the quality and innovative strength of the German bakery trade. The introduction took place in March 2025 and is already having an impact in the bakery landscape.

The importance of bread quality is also relevant from the perspective of sustainability. Experts like Dr. Karin Bergmann and Prof. Michael Kleinert have emphasized in a brochure how bread can help promote a more sustainable diet. These initiatives show that bakers not only have a good knack for dough and ingredient selection, but also for responsible business.

Award winners and trends

The “Bread of the Year” award has become more important in recent years, with the trends in the baking trade continually being kept in mind. The nut bread was chosen and awarded as Bread of the Year 2025. This took place in a celebratory setting with the official opening by Cem Özdemir, the Federal Minister for Food and Agriculture. These events stimulate public interest and promote awareness of quality baked goods.

This successful event in Steinbach am Wald brings a breath of fresh air into the world of baking. It remains to be hoped that the high quality of the award-winning bakers will continue to be maintained in the future and that new trends will continue to be taken up in order to further promote the diversity of German bread.
