Kulmbach: Flood protection project starts - 1 million euro investment!

In Kulmbach, people take things seriously when it comes to flood protection. The city has decided to invest around one million euros in the safety of its citizens. Today, on October 8, 2025, Gabriele Merz, head of the water management office, and Mayor Ingo Lehmann gave the official starting signal for construction work in the Blaich district. The second construction phase of the comprehensive flood protection measures begins and is scheduled to be completed by mid-2026 Frankenpost reported.

The necessity of these measures has been demonstrated many times in the past. In particular, the flood events in 2006 and before made it clear that the existing flood troughs on the White Main, which were built in the 1930s, are no longer sufficient. These troughs are now being criticized for their insufficient stability and height problems. To ensure that flooding can be better regulated in the future, extensive construction work is now beginning, with an expected total cost contribution of 17 million euros for flood protection in Blaich. Of this, 1.1 million euros come from the city of Kulmbach Hof Water Management Office explained.

Background and planning

The challenges posed by flooding are not new. Nature also has its role, because riparian forests sometimes require flooding to maintain their habitats. With human activities, however, the risk of flooding increases as more and more settlements and traffic areas are created in vulnerable areas. The Bavarian State Ministry for the Environment and Consumer Protection has launched various programs to improve flood protection. The Flood protection action program 2020plus is a response to the more frequent extreme flood events that experts are predicting due to climate change.

The Hof Water Management Office began planning as early as 2009, which has now resulted in a comprehensive flood protection project. The planned measures extend over 1.55 kilometers between the B85 and the Berlin Bridge and include, among other things, the construction of a new flood retention area and the natural design of the flood basin.

Measures and progress

The measures include improving the dikes and building sheet pile walls that fit harmoniously into the landscape. In the Pörbitscher Aue, the water ecology is also taken into account in order to increase the structural diversity. The completion of all construction phases is eagerly awaited, as they will not only increase safety, but also protect 92 jobs in Blaich and secure an area of 7.8 hectares.

The construction work currently underway is a step in the right direction so that Kulmbach will continue to be well prepared against the dangers that flood events can pose in the future. With solid investments and clever planning, the city has the chance to make flood protection a real location factor. For citizens, this means more security and a great deal of quality of life.
