Uli Hoeneß: A life between fame, scandal and comeback!
Uli Hoeneß, one of the most dazzling figures in the football world and, above all, closely linked to FC Bayern Munich, celebrated his 73rd birthday on January 5, 2025. Hoeneß, born in Ulm, began his career as a talented youth player at VfB Ulm, where he soon became captain of the DFB school team. At the age of 17, he moved to TSG Ulm 1846 before signing an amateur contract with FC Bayern Munich in 1970. There he would shape football history.
During his active time at FC Bayern, Hoeneß won numerous titles, including the German championship three times and the European Cup three times. He celebrated the European Championship title with the German national team in 1972 and crowned his career by winning the World Cup in 1974. However, a shadow over his playing career remained when he missed a crucial penalty in the final of the 1976 European Championships.
From the playing field to management
After injury problems, Hoeneß ended his playing career in 1979 at the age of just 27 and just four months later became the youngest manager in the history of the Bundesliga at FC Bayern. Under his leadership, the club experienced an unprecedented wave of success with 16 German championships and nine DFB Cup victories between 1980 and 2008. Hoeneß not only became the creator of FC Bayern, but also an icon in German football.
His entrepreneurial streak was already evident in 1985 when he founded HoWe Wurstwaren together with Werner Weiß. Today his children run the company. Hoeneß not only successfully built up the club, but also his business activities.
The shadow of the past
But not everything that glittered was gold. In recent years, Hoeneß has been exposed to serious allegations. In 2013 he self-reported tax evasion, which ultimately culminated in a sentence in 2014: three years and six months in prison. This was a setback for his career and he temporarily withdrew from the public eye. However, after his early release from prison in 2016, he returned as President of FC Bayern in the same year and remained in this position until 2019.
Despite his controversies, Hoeneß is revered as "Mr. FC Bayern", a title he has earned due to his remarkable achievements and tireless commitment to the club. On August 2, 2025, he was hospitalized due to medical problems but is now well again. He devoted a lot of time to his family - he has been married to Susanne Hoeneß since 1973 and has two children and four grandchildren - and his wife, especially in the quieter phases of his career.
Hoeneß remains an influential figure in German football and is known for his clear positioning against right-wing extremist political trends.
