EHEC wave in Lower Franconia: Alarm about contaminated food!

The health situation regarding EHEC infections has reached a worrying peak this year. Loud Radio gong EHEC cases in Germany have risen to their highest level since 2011. The Robert Koch Institute assumes that contaminated food is the cause of the current outbreaks, but concrete evidence of the source of the contamination has not yet been determined.

Health risks and prevention

EHEC, which stands for enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli, not only causes diarrhea but in severe cases can lead to life-threatening complications. There is an increased risk of kidney failure or even death, particularly in children under ten years of age, the elderly or weakened people. The EHEC situation has developed significantly since the summer. This makes it clear that the number of infections - still 4,570 in 2022 - is already over 4,111 cases this year. An increase in EHEC numbers can be noted, particularly in Bavaria. This shows that the topic of hygiene is more relevant than ever and the population should be well informed.
