DAV Memmingen celebrates 9,000. Member – New horizons in mountain sports!

A special milestone was recently celebrated in Memmingen: the Memmingen section of the German Alpine Club (DAV) celebrated its 9,000th. Member, Veronica Strigel, welcomed. This important occasion was duly celebrated and not only members of the Alpine Club were present, but also the mayor of Memmingen, Jan Rothenbacher. He praised the club's excellent youth work, which he was able to experience together with his own children. What is particularly pleasing is the fact that DAV Memmingen is the largest club in the city and makes a significant contribution to the promotion of mountain sports and youth development. The increasing number of members speaks for itself: more and more people are recognizing the advantages of membership in the Alpine Club, especially because of the diverse range of activities it offers.

The DAV Memmingen section is not only a place for passionate mountain athletes, but also a meeting place for people of all ages. The offers are aimed at sports and climbing enthusiasts who would like to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the DAV center on Allgäuer Straße. There you will not only find a modern bouldering hall, but also numerous events that invite you to take part. Veronica Strigel, who recently moved to Memmingen, was inspired to become a member by the club's diverse activities.

Facts about the German Alpine Club

A look at the figures for the German Alpine Club shows that it was founded in 1869 and today has around 1,570,602 members. Of these, 44.2% are women and around 22.6% are children, adolescents and young adults up to 25 years of age. In 2024, membership growth was 3.30%. In total, the DAV has 355 regional sections and offers numerous social and sporting activities. The extensive infrastructure includes 325 publicly accessible mountain huts and refuges, more than 200,000 m² of climbing areas and over 30,000 km of services in the form of paths and climbs in the Alps.

In addition to promoting mountain sports, the DAV also places a strong focus on youth work and volunteer work. Around 34,400 volunteers work around 2.4 million hours every year, which corresponds to an economic added value of around 36.9 million euros. Over 100,000 individual events per year, ranging from group and section tours to various training and learning courses, show how active the association is and what opportunities it offers.

Community and future

The Memmingen section is a prime example of the positive development within the DAV. Mayor Rothenbacher encouraged everyone interested to become part of this vibrant community. The combination of sport, nature experiences and social exchange makes membership in the DAV an attractive choice for many Cologne residents and guests in the region. The Alpine Club has its hands full to continue to encourage enthusiasm for mountain sports and the community. The DAV and its sections presented themselves as strong partners in the development of young talent and in maintaining the cultural heritage of mountain sports.

The occasion described at the beginning shows that the German Alpine Club is not only a place for adventures in nature, but also a space to experience community and cohesion - true to the motto: “Enjoy life to the fullest together!”
