On October 3, 2025, Memmingen will be the setting for a special event that will bring the city community together. The “Memminger Freedom Prize 1525” ceremony, which is presented to Christian Streich, a committed football coach and former professional player, takes place in the Church of St. Martin. The award ceremony begins at 11 a.m. and will be opened by Mayor Jan Rothenbacher and District Council President Martin Sailer, both of whom emphasize the relevance of Streich's commitment to democracy and social coexistence.
Around 1,000 guests are expected and there are 100 tickets that will be raffled off in advance. The event is the highlight of Schwabentag 2025, which has the motto “Shaping Democracy”. In view of current social developments, this is more than a celebration - it is a call for active participation and exchange about the meaning of freedom and democracy.
Diverse program for everyone
In addition to the award ceremony, visitors can expect a varied stage and participatory program. From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., a wide variety of offers from the region will be presented in the town hall and on the market square. Here you will find information stands from organizations that are committed to social coexistence and strengthening democratic values. Children and families don't miss out either: numerous hands-on activities and an inclusive football tournament, organized by Team Banana Flank, ensure fun and entertainment.
The concert program on the market square starts at 1 p.m. and includes performances by artists such as Ceci and ScheinEilig. Another highlight is the public interview with Christian Streich, which will take place at 3:30 p.m. in the town hall. Here anyone interested has the opportunity to find out more about his views and exchange ideas with him.
Additional activities and exhibitions
For those visitors who are thirsty for knowledge, the open day at the Memmingen Regional Court will provide exciting insights into the legal world, with guided tours and interesting lectures. The supporting program is supported by an impulse event by Prof. Dr. Heribert Prantl added the evening before, October 2nd, in the Maximilian Kolbe House.
The Bavarian exhibition “Project Freedom – Memmingen 1525” can also be seen in the Dietrich Bonhoeffer House until October 19th, while the exhibition “Traces of the Peasants’ War – what remains?” is in the city museum from October 1st. is opened.
The day will be rounded off on October 3rd with singing together on the market square, organized as part of the “Germany Sings and Sounds” action day. Everyone is invited to be part of this special graduation designed to strengthen community and spread joy.
