Egon Coordes became particularly well-known as an assistant coach at FC Bayern Munich. He enjoyed great success under renowned coaches Udo Lattek, Jupp Heynckes and Giovanni Trapattoni, including four German championships in 1985, 1986, 1989 and 1990. His return to Bayern Munich as Trapattoni's assistant in 1997 and again under Heynckes in 2011 and 2012 cemented his status as a valued part of the club. He was also able to participate in the coaching staff of the Bayern Munich basketball team.
A fighter, without a doubt
Although he was able to shine at Bayern and in his role as an assistant, his head coaching positions were often characterized by less luck. The engagements with VfB Stuttgart, Hamburger SV and Hannover 96 each ended prematurely. Coordes also looked after teams in Switzerland, the Gulf region and even Iran. All in all, he played 157 Bundesliga games for Werder Bremen and VfB Stuttgart, which clearly underlines his experience as a player and coach, even if his head coaching career did not reach the same heights.
In recent years, Coordes has increasingly stepped back from the front row, but has remained active in the background, including as a scout for FC Bayern, where he discovered Hansi Flick, who later went on to have an important career in European football. His daughter, Claudia, lives in Las Vegas and works as a real estate agent there. In June 2023, his experiences and views in the world of football were honored - a life's work that will remain in the history of football.
