Traffic chaos at Memmingen Airport: New motorway junction required!
The increasing volume of traffic around Memmingen Airport is increasingly becoming a challenge for commuters and travelers. There are always traffic jams and disruptions on the A 96, especially at the Memmingen-Ost motorway junction. This is literally overrun during peak hours and no longer meets current requirements. In order to get this situation under control, a comprehensive investigation has now been initiated to find a remedy. There are two possible approaches: the complete renovation of the existing junction or the construction of a new additional junction on the A 96. The new construction in particular could be combined with measures to relieve traffic, as a study by schwaebische.de makes clear makes.
In the course of the traffic study, which was commissioned by the federal Autobahn GmbH, the Unterallgäu district and the Allgäu Airport in 2020, the need for action was clearly confirmed. A new report has repeatedly pointed out that there is an urgent need for action at this junction. The roundabout that regulates the motorway exit is simply overloaded at rush hour. The traffic situation is not expected to get better in the coming years, but rather worse, as traffic continues to increase. In this context, District Administrator Alex Eder emphasized that the federal government bears responsibility for the necessary measures at this point, as reported by new-facts.eu.
Construction progress and planning
Possible solutions to the traffic problems include converting the existing junction, which could possibly be connected to a new entrance and exit on the southern carriageway of the motorway, as well as building a new junction, which requires converting the roundabout into a traffic light control system. The federal Autobahn GmbH is currently examining the structural feasibility of these solutions.
In addition to the planned improvements to the motorway connection, efforts to promote cycling should not go unmentioned. Several projects are being planned in the Unterallgäu district that aim to close gaps in the cycle path network. For example, the municipality of Lachen will build two cycle paths between Moosbach and Lachen and between Lachen and Albishofen. A cycle path along the MN 16 district road is also being started, with a cost of around 420,000 euros. Here the district will cover half of the additional costs, while the municipality will be responsible for maintenance and traffic safety.
A look at the traffic figures
The importance of these measures is underlined by the current traffic figures. According to the standard work “Traffic in Numbers” from the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, there is continuous growth in traffic volume. This compendium not only covers mobility developments in Germany, but also offers a comparison at the European level and can be downloaded free of charge from the [BMV] website (https://www.bmv.de/SharedDocs/DE/artikel/G/verkehr-in-zahlen.html).
The upcoming local elections in the Free State of Bavaria on March 8, 2026 could also have an impact on the prioritization of transport projects in the Lower Allgäu, as the elected representatives will decide on important measures for traffic calming and control in the future.
