Hopf brewery in new hands: Tegernsee takes over traditional brand!
Beer lovers in Miesbach in Upper Bavaria can breathe a sigh of relief: the traditional Hopf wheat beer brewery is changing hands again, but all signs point to continuity. Loud Mercury The Paulaner Brewery Group will complete the takeover in January 2026 in collaboration with the Herzoglich Brauhaus Tegernsee. This decision promises to preserve the over 100-year-old brewing tradition of the Hopf brewery in Miesbach while at the same time creating positive synergies.
The takeover takes place in the form of a letter of intent that has already been signed. Tilo Ruttmann, the brewery's current managing director, will remain on board. This not only ensures stability, but also gives the brewery's approximately 70 employees a reason to be happy, as all jobs will be retained. Jörg Biebernick, CEO of the Paulaner Brewery Group, expressed optimism and emphasized the success story of the Hopf brand, which has experienced a remarkable upswing under the Paulaner Group since 2006.
Synergies for the future
Christian Wagner, managing director of the Tegernseer Brauhaus, also sees great potential in combining the two breweries. The planned synergies could strengthen the presence of the Hopf and Tegernseer brands on the market and at the same time offer customers an expanded range. However, it was agreed not to disclose the purchase price and other details of the transaction.
Placed in a broader economic perspective, such business combinations and mergers are not uncommon. How Statista reported, there were almost 40,000 such deals worldwide in 2023, with Germany doing well with around 1,851 M&A transactions and a volume of over 100 billion US dollars (https://de.statista.com/themen/1370/mergers-und-acquisitions/). The takeover of the Mannesmann company by Vodafone in 1999 is considered one of the best-known mergers, which impressively shows how markets can change and develop.
This step is groundbreaking for the Miesbach Hopf brewery and could have a long-term positive impact on regional customs and the local economy. Ultimately, history shows that well-managed mergers often help preserve a company's legacy while bringing a breath of fresh air to the business.
