Family cycling rediscovered: seven adventure tours in the Alpine country!

A new family bike campaign has been launched in the picturesque Schlierach-Leitzachtal, bringing a breath of fresh air to leisure activities in the region. On June 30, 2025, the municipal company Regionalentwicklung Oberland (REO) launched this initiative together with the municipalities of Irschenberg, Miesbach, Hausham, Schliersee, Fischbachau and Bayrischzell. The aim is to make cycling more attractive and more exciting for families, so that trips with the little ones are not only fun but also safe.

The campaign brings seven newly developed circular tours to the plan, which are offered in the six participating communities. For each community there are not only longer routes, but also shorter versions that are perfect for families with younger children. The routes connect numerous family-friendly destinations such as playgrounds, sports facilities and outdoor swimming pools, guaranteeing a varied day.

Explorer brochure

A highlight of the campaign is the newly published brochure, which not only contains maps of the cycle paths, but also provides information about child-friendly excursion destinations. The brochure is not only informative, but also interactive, with puzzles and small tasks that encourage little explorers to take part. Cycling families can also look forward to small gifts such as child-friendly drinking bottles and glucose in the participating communities. These materials are available free of charge from the tourist information offices of the participating locations and from the REO.

Safety is also ensured: difficult passages and danger spots are clearly marked so that parents and children can enjoy cycling with peace of mind. The tours are suitable for both larger and smaller adventure seekers as there are numerous children's playgrounds and relaxation areas along the routes.

Bike preparation and health benefits

When it comes to preparing for exciting bike tours, there are a few things to consider. Put on your helmet and off you go! Children should learn the traffic rules from an early age and cycle on suitable routes. Whether for short trips or multi-day tours like the Miller family from Munich, who recently went on a four-day bike trip through the beautiful nature of the Schlierach and Leitzachtal valleys, you should always plan. The recommended daily distances of three to five days not only make a family trip relaxing, but also help improve heart health, as shown in studies that report a 20% reduction in heart disease rates among cyclists.

The brochure and the associated campaign show that there are a number of attractive cycle paths for families in Germany and Austria. From challenging to kid-friendly routes, the main thing is that fun and safety are the top priority. This is a great way to start the cycling season in spring and summer. Further inspiring cycle routes can be found in the selection of the ten best family cycle routes in Germany, which are presented, for example, on Bikeclub.

For all families who want their children to enjoy exercise, this initiative offers a great opportunity to discover nature together. If you finally want to break away from everyday life, you should definitely take a look at the brochure and take advantage of the region's new opportunities.
