Cult café Elisabeths Platzerl” closes after 13 years: farewell in pink!
After 13 years of full color and creativity, the popular café “Elisabeths Platzerl” in Miesbach will close its doors on August 6, 2025. Owner Elisabeth Schwojer, together with her daughters Magdalena and Anna, decided to break new ground. This spontaneous decision came as a surprise to many of the cafe's fans, who took to social media to express their regret about the closure. Schwojer, considered a defining figure on the town square, relied on creative marketing strategies through Facebook and Instagram to spread the word about her lunch specials and special events. The café's striking pink color concept made it a real eye-catcher in the city.
Elisabeth Schwojer first opened her café on Shrove Tuesday in 2013. Her sensitivity to the needs of her customers has made the “Platzerl” a popular meeting place. With a personal touch and her open ear for guests, she shaped the Miesbach gastronomy scene. “We leave with one laughing eye and one crying eye,” says Schwojer, who also wants to implement new visionary ideas to enable her daughters to realize their own dreams. The closure comes at a time when not only in Miesbach but nationwide around 62,000 catering establishments had to close between 2019 and 2023, around 8,000 of which were bankrupt, as Statista reports.
An overview of the challenges facing the catering industry
The catering industry is currently facing major challenges. The increase in closures since 2022 and 2023 is attributed in particular to the consequences of the Ukraine war, price increases and inflation. The industry has not yet recovered from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, and the increase in food sales tax at the beginning of 2023 has further complicated the situation. According to Patrik-Ludwig Hantzsch from Creditreform, the overall economic conditions in the hospitality industry are unfavorable and a continuing trend of insolvencies is expected. Caterers and younger businesses are particularly affected.
With the closure of “Elisabeths Platzerl”, the people of Miesbach are not only losing a place to meet, but also a gastronomic institution that brought back many wonderful memories. The café was known not only for its creative cuisine, but also for its special service. However, Elisabeth Schwojer is optimistic about the future and hopes to find promising successors for the premises. “We’re excited to see what’s to come,” she says as she prepares for new challenges.
A farewell that moves many people and whose after-effects will certainly be felt in the city for a long time. Because a good place is always missing in town - even when something new flashes on the horizon.
For fans of the café, we can only hope that “Elisabeths Platzerl” is not just a conclusion, but also the beginning of something new. It remains to be hoped that the successors can continue Elisabeth Schwojer's legacy in an appropriate manner.
