Wrestling festival in Elsenfeld: German championships inspire spectators!
The city of Elsenfeld recently became the venue for the German Men's and Women's Wrestling Championships, which took place from June 20th to 22nd, 2025 in the Untermainhalle. This event was the second time the championships were held in this impressive hall, which offers space for 1,450 seats and 400 standing places and proved to be a real crowd puller. As meine-news.de reports, the stands were well filled on Saturday evening when the final fights took place.
The German Wrestling Federation (DRB) was extremely satisfied with the number of spectators and the way the competitions went. “The hall is the perfect venue for wrestling,” said DRB General Secretary Jens Gündling, who also praised the improvements compared to the previous year, such as the mirror-inverted placement of the mats and the best possible running paths. The district's caretaker team also received recognition for the excellent conditions within the hall. This week, construction began on June 18th with the laying of mats and technical tests for light and sound on the Ascension Day holiday.
The sporting highlight
The competitions were held in 30 weight classes in both freestyle and Greco-Roman style. The fights started at 9:30 a.m. on all days, followed by the semi-finals from 4:00 p.m. The final fights took place on both Saturday evening and Sunday morning, with spectators treated to exciting encounters. On Saturday in particular, there was a live performance of the German national anthem by Markus Rill, and the awards given to the best wrestlers provided special emotional moments.
The new “DM 2025” section on the DRB website, which can be found at ringen.de, offered an additional incentive. This not only provides a central point of contact for all results, but also promotes digitalization in wrestling and significantly improves the service for the wrestling community. Here athletes, coaches, officials and fans can get direct access to competition results.
Political support and outlook
The championships also had the patronage of Sandro Kirchner, the Bavarian State Secretary, who attended the event on June 20th. Amid the political support and the enthusiastic wrestling community, it became clear that the choice of the Untermainhalle for these championships was also based on the DRB's positive experiences from a previous team final.
In a review of the 2025 German Championship, DRB President Jens Nettekoven was also pleased with the ultimately large audience response, despite initial concerns due to the Bavarian Whitsun holidays. The event was described not only as an outstanding competition highlight, but also as a “family festival”. The wrestling community is already looking forward to future championships and their venues.
With this successful event, the Untermainhalle in Elsenfeld will certainly continue to be popular in the future and establish itself as an important location for wrestling.
