Ukrainian Independence Day: Zelensky calls for the fight for freedom!

On August 24, 2025, Ukraine celebrated its Independence Day and President Volodymyr Zelensky used the opportunity to send a strong signal of determination and hope. In his speech, delivered three and a half years after the start of the war, he spoke of a better future for Ukraine. “We will not stop fighting,” said Zelensky, who symbolized the indestructibility of his country with the Statue of Liberty on the Maidan. “Main-Echo reports that the protracted conflict has boosted the self-esteem of Ukrainians determined to stand up for their freedom.

However, the war continues to be characterized by daily air strikes by Russia against civilian facilities. In response, Ukraine is planning targeted attacks on Russian fuel depots and military airfields. Despite these activities, the Pentagon has blocked the use of ATACMS missiles against Russian targets for months. Nevertheless, Ukraine has stepped up a drone-building program and unveiled a new missile called Flamingo, which has a range of 3,000 kilometers. The reports on advances in Ukrainian military strategy also include the use of drone strikes that severely disrupt Russian fuel supplies.

International reactions and security guarantees

There is a growing discussion in the international arena about the necessary security guarantees for Ukraine. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul underlines the importance of these guarantees, which should come close to NATO membership. Around 30 countries, including Japan and Canada, have agreed to support Ukraine in these difficult times. “ZDF highlights that EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas emphasizes the need for robust security guarantees” that can deter Russia from further aggression and defend Ukraine in the event of an attack.

The USA and European countries are discussing a coordinated concept for the deployment of troops and equipment. Ukrainian forces are expected to bear the brunt of the fight against Russia, with U.S. and European partners providing support. Interestingly, developing an effective defense plan for Ukraine requires the cooperation of all stakeholders to prevent possible escalation by Russia.

Current developments and outlook

Russian attacks on Kiev and Lviv have decreased in recent days, but the security situation remains tense. The Polish Air Force has deployed aircraft to secure its own airspace, while the Netherlands is sending 300 soldiers to Poland with modern air defense systems. These measures are intended to ensure that Ukraine's military equipment is protected. The Ukrainian military leadership also reports that it is actively working on a security concept for the period after the war.

Despite efforts, hopes for an early meeting between Zelensky and Putin have diminished, as Foreign Minister Lavrov stressed that such a meeting must be well prepared and called for Ukraine's surrender. The outlook remains tense, but Zelensky remains optimistic about future promises of protection. The Russian threat and maintaining Ukraine's security remain the focus, while the people of Ukraine remain sheltered in place, uncertain about their future.
