Traffic madness on the Lower Main: drug drivers and vandalism in focus!
The issue of traffic safety in the Bavarian Lower Main is becoming more and more pressing. On July 16, 2025, police departments conducted targeted traffic stops. As part of these measures, not only were conspicuous road users stopped, but also a frightening incident was reported that points to the general problems in road traffic.
A total of around 400 vehicles were checked that day. The police clearly focused on preventing driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. This resulted in the removal of 11 road users who were under the influence of drugs or alcohol. This confirms the alarming statistics from 2023, in which there were 499 traffic accidents under the influence of alcohol in Lower Franconia - the highest level in the last ten years, as reported by the Bavaria Police.
A frightening example
Another incident that attracted police attention occurred in Obernburg a. Main. A 19-year-old, wearing only his underpants, deliberately damaged eight parked cars with a paving stone. This was observed by passers-by and reported immediately. The man was taken into custody and a blood sample was taken. The property damage amounts to several thousand euros and an investigation has been initiated. Such incidents show how important traffic controls are and how the use of drugs on the road endangers our safety.
Drug influence in traffic
The influence of drugs such as cannabis, cocaine, heroin or LSD on the ability to drive is urgently warned by the ADAC. Even the smallest amounts in the blood are prohibited. From August 22, 2024, new limits for THC will apply, which also impose strict regulations on novice drivers and people under 21 years of age. Driving under the influence of drugs is not only associated with significant fines, but also with civil consequences, which can result in additional costs and claims for recourse through motor vehicle liability insurance.
The police were also lucky because a cyclist in Aschaffenburg caused a stir on the same day. The 34-year-old initially escaped control, but was caught on Bardroffstrasse. The officers also noticed drug-related symptoms in him, which led to a blood sample being taken.
Strengthening controls
In order to further increase traffic safety, the Lower Franconia police headquarters plans to intensify traffic controls in 2025. The aim is to remove reckless drivers who are under the influence of alcohol or drugs. This is particularly important to reduce the number of traffic accidents and dangerous situations on the roads.
Recent events highlight the challenges in road transport. Everyone is asked to contribute to greater safety and to pay attention to their own ability to drive. Responsible use of alcohol and drugs is essential.
