Pure drama! RWE, after a late equalizer at 1860, still unbeaten!

On Saturday, January 17th, TSV 1860 Munich and Rot-Weiss Essen fought for important points in an exciting traditional duel. Around 15,000 spectators, including 1,500 Rot-Weiss Essen fans, gathered in the stadium on Grünwalder Straße in Munich to watch the duel. The stadium doors were able to be opened 90 minutes before kick-off, but the tickets were sold out in advance and there was no box office. So for many people it was a case of using Park & Ride or taking the subway. However, the route to the stadium from the main train station was quick - it was only a two-minute walk between Wettersteinplatz and the stadium.

In the game itself there was initially no pressure. Both teams were careful not to make the first mistake. For a long time everything pointed to a 0-0 draw until the game picked up speed in the 82nd minute. After a follow-up shot, Marek Janssen made it 1-0 for Rot-Weiss Essen, which led to a wave of enthusiasm among the traveling fans. But the joy didn't last long. In the last minute of regular time, Max Reinthaler equalized with a header from a corner, which cemented the final score of 1-1. “It wasn't our best day, but we took a point,” said coach Uwe Koschinat after the game.

An exciting gameplay

Little exciting happened on the field for the first 45 minutes. Hobsch had the best opportunity for 1860 Munich in the 8th minute, while RWE looked for their first shots with Swajkowski (14th) and Mizuta (27th). But neither the Lions nor the Red-Whites were able to create any real chances in the first half. After the break, 1860 became more active and had their first dangerous attempt with a cross from Golz (49th). However, the best opportunity came from a set piece in the 70th minute, although Hobsch's header did not have the desired result.

On the Red and White side, Hofmann and Gjasula were missing due to suspensions, while two players, Bouebari and Janssen, initially sat on the bench. Coach Koschinat changed the starting eleven to five positions and debuted the young Gianluca Swajkowski. The situation was similar at 1860 Munich, as they had to do without eleven injured players. Here too, a change in the squad was necessary. Vollath stood in goal for the ill Dähne, and some new faces like Voet and Schifferl found their place in the starting line-up.

One point for the table

The draw doesn't change the table situation much: Rot-Weiss Essen remains four points ahead of TSV 1860 Munich. In the next games we hope to continue the positive series of five games without defeat. On January 24th, RWE will be challenged again when TSV Havelse comes to the stadium on Hafenstrasse. The Munich team continues on January 25th against Osnabrück, where they want to start the race to catch up.

The fans can now look forward to the next round. So the meeting on the 24th will be absolutely crucial for RWE to climb further up the league. The anticipation for the next games is already great. Will the red and whites be able to continue their trend? We'll find out soon!

Information about the game and how to get there can also be found at Rot-Weiss Essen and Kicker. If you don't want to miss the next game, you should get your tickets in good time!
