Carnival start in Munich: Celebrate the time of fools with us!

The foolish time is finally here again! The big carnival season began in Munich on January 19, 2026. Numerous events and parties invite you to celebrate. The newly proclaimed carnival prince couple Samantha I. and Stephan I, who were enthroned on Marienplatz on January 3rd, tower above all of this. With its colorful celebrations that are deeply rooted in the medieval roots of carnival, the season promises exciting experiences for all enthusiasts.

The celebrations, which grew out of the original festivals such as weapon dances and jousting games, run until February 17th. A real highlight will be the traditional dance of the market women on Shrove Tuesday, February 17th, at the Viktualienmarkt, which starts at 11 a.m. this year. This is a tradition with over 100 years of history that celebrates the reputation of market women and is known for its lively atmosphere. A special tip: There will be freshly tapped beer and other delicacies at the Viktualienmarkt on this day.
