Great chaos in Munich: tree falls on regional train - 400 passengers affected!

A spectacular incident occurred on October 27, 2025 in Munich when a tree fell on a Bavarian Regiobahn (BRB) regional train. The incident happened around 11 a.m. at Kolumbusplatz when the tree first collapsed a noise barrier before falling on the RE 5, which was heading towards the main train station. Luckily, around 400 passengers who were on board at the time escaped with horror - both the passengers and the train driver remained uninjured.

The noise barrier is not entirely without importance, after all, numerous such walls have been installed along railway lines in recent years. In 2024, around 70 kilometers of sound barriers will be built by Deutsche Bahn to reduce rail noise, according to [Tagesspiegel](https://www.tagesspiegel.de/wirtschaft/schallschutz-im-habensnetz-70-kilometer-larmschutzwande-an-bahn routes-built-13634392.html). The site of the incident was therefore not only a place of horror, but also an interesting example of the railway's ever-increasing noise protection measures.

Evacuation and route closure

After the tree fell, the route was immediately closed to train traffic. This happened shortly after the impact at 11am. The BRB informed that the regional trains in the east would have to end at the Ostbahnhof or in Grafing by 2:30 p.m. and return from there. Travelers traveling between the main station and Ostbahnhof had to switch to the S-Bahn.

The reason for the tree falling is currently unclear. On the morning of the incident, the German Weather Service warned of squalls in the region that could have contributed to the accident. While the situation at Columbus Square caused some excitement, emergency services from the federal and state police and the fire department were also on site to evacuate the passengers and take initial measures.

Short and sweet

  • Daten des Vorfalls: Datum: 27. Oktober 2025
  • Veranstaltungsort: München, zwischen Hauptbahnhof und Ostbahnhof
  • Unternehmensinformationen: Der Zug war ein Regionalexpress der Bayerischen Regiobahn (BRB)
  • Unfälle und Verletzungen: Keine Verletzten unter Passagieren und Zugführer
  • Streckensperrung: Ab 11 Uhr, unklare Dauer der Sperrung
  • Einsatzkräfte: Polizei und Feuerwehr am Unfallort

It is hoped that the necessary investigations will reveal as quickly as possible why the tree fell and that such incidents can be avoided in the future. Noise control measures, which have increased in recent years, could play a crucial role in this regard, even if external circumstances such as weather conditions are not always predictable. The incident is still a truly terrifying moment for the travelers affected.
