Heat wave over Munich: Yorma's at the main station closes after 25 years!
A look at the current situation in Munich shows that a heat wave is spreading across the city. Today, July 1, 2025, meteorologists from the German Weather Service (DWD) are warning of temperatures that could reach up to 39 degrees in regions. The new hot days bring with them health risks, and the DWD recommends finding cool places and drinking enough water. It will exceed the 30 degree mark in many regions of Germany, which is problematic not only for people but also for nature, especially when you consider the rising water temperature of the Isar, which could endanger huchen and trout. The effects of drought are noticeable – not only in nature, but also in urban structures.
A pressing issue in this context is the impending closure of the highest-selling Yorma's branch at the main train station, which has to close at the end of the month after 25 years. Around 12,000 people shop there every day and the branch is the largest of its kind in Germany. The reason for the closure is an extensive renovation at the main train station, which saddens many regular customers. Yorma's always offered reasonable prices, the classic was the salami baguette for just 1.70 euros or the hearty Augustiner half for 1.95 euros. The branch will definitely be missed not only as a place to shop, but also as a meeting place.
Redesign of the main station
However, the end of the Yorma's branch does not mean the end for the employees, who are being relocated to other branches. Along with the closure of Yorma’s, a Rischart branch will also be moving to the main station. This new counter is scheduled to open in September and is impressively 15 meters long. This means that the main station remains a lively place, even if it is changing. As for customers, it remains to be seen how the new offerings and prices will compare to Yorma’s.
Heat and the city of Munich
All of this happens in the middle of summer, when not only construction work but also summer festivals and folk festivals in the Munich area are in high season. These offer a welcome change for many young people with cheap beer and fixed meeting points that do not require advance reservations. A visit is worthwhile not only for local guests, but also for tourists who want to experience Bavarian hospitality.
In the coming days, the issues of heat and sunburn could become even more prominent as weather forecasts predict more tropical nights and extreme temperatures. For this reason, the Ministry of Health in Brandenburg recommends employers to ensure heat protection measures for employees, which shows that the issue goes far beyond the streets and affects everyone.
So Munich will continue to be a place full of changes in the coming hot days - be it renovations that affect the cityscape or the challenges that the heat wave brings with it. As we look forward to the imminent opening of Rischart and the dwindling presence of Yorma’s, we can only hope that the temperature does not bring too much concern and that we can all deal with these challenges well.
