Experience the diversity of enjoyment: Open Kitchen Day in Bittenbrunn!
On July 8, 2025, the vocational school for nutrition and care in Bittenbrunn opened its doors and invited people to a colorful “open kitchen day”. Here the school's graduates took part and showed what they had learned in their two to three years of training. From sushi burgers to Asian noodle pans, the menu was a small culinary trip around the world and attracted numerous visitors. “It’s not just about good food, but also about practical training,” emphasizes director Sabine Wasmer, who underlines the importance of this event.
The students mostly come from middle school, but occasionally also from secondary school, and after two years they receive the qualification as assistants. If you stay longer, you can even start your professional life after three years as a certified assistant for nutrition and care. The training not only opens up career prospects for young people, but also the opportunity to expand their general education. If you have the necessary commitment, you can earn a secondary school leaving certificate with a grade point average of 3.0 and basic knowledge of English.
Diverse options and support
The training covers a variety of topics that make young people fit for the world of work. Graduates of the vocational school work in various areas, such as in the catering industry, the hotel industry or in large households. Your tasks include not only preparing food, but also laundry, cleaning and looking after family members and seniors. This requires a friendly approach and an honest attitude - skills that are specifically promoted at school.
The school particularly supports children from families with a migration background through targeted German language support. Inclusion is an important part of training to ensure equal opportunities for everyone. Under the leadership of senior director of studies Eva Hertle, around 2,600 young people learn here, making the school a central educational provider in the region.
Modern standards for a dynamic industry
With the ongoing modernization of the curriculum, the school is responding to the changing demands of the world of work. The latest electric stoves and AI-controlled Thermomix devices are available to optimally prepare students for their professional future. These measures are part of a comprehensive reform of training professions in the hospitality industry, which focuses on more sustainability and digitalization. We worked closely with social partners such as the German Hotel and Restaurant Association (DEHOGA).
The updating of the educational program is not only designed to make the professions more attractive, but also to take new developments in the industry into account. “Young people have many opportunities here,” explains a spokesman for the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. These new apprenticeships are specifically tailored to the needs of the market and promise excellent career opportunities.
In summary, the vocational school for nutrition and care in Bittenbrunn shows how practical training models can contribute to the development of young talent. It remains exciting to see how these future prospects will also come to fruition in the Cologne region and beyond. On this special day, visitors were not only able to indulge in culinary delights, but also gain an insight into future-oriented training.
