Buses instead of trains: Big change between Nuremberg and Regensburg!

Next year it will be all about the route between Nuremberg and Regensburg. Deutsche Bahn is planning a comprehensive General renovation the railway line, which takes place from February 6th to July 10th, 2026. During this time, the rail service will be drastically restructured in order to still guarantee mobility for travelers.

Every day, over 90 replacement buses are deployed on eight routes, which together cover more than 45,000 kilometers. The replacement service ensures that travelers can continue to get from A to B easily, even if the trains have to be temporarily canceled. The quality concept for the buses is particularly noteworthy: Not only are they barrier-free, but they also offer storage space for luggage, WiFi and, in some vehicles, even toilets.

Comprehensive construction work

An important goal of the renovation is the renewal of over 80 kilometers of tracks and 90 kilometers of overhead lines. In addition, renovation work on a railway embankment near Deining and a bridge near Burgthann is planned. All 20 train stations between Feucht and Regensburg-Prüfening will also be made barrier-free and upgraded in order to increase travel comfort.

The effects of the construction work should not be underestimated. The ICE trains will be rerouted via Ingolstadt and will take around an hour longer to get to Regensburg. In addition, the long-distance transport offering in Regensburg, Passau and Plattling will be reduced; Long-distance trains are temporarily not stopping in Straubing. In order to ensure the mobility of travelers, there is an additional ICE trip daily from Munich via Landshut, Regensburg and Passau to Vienna.

Information and support for travelers

In order to provide travelers with the best possible support during the construction phase, information about the timetable data will be available on the Deutsche Bahn website and in the DB Navigator app from October 15, 2025. Travelers between Neustadt (Donau) and Regensburg and from Landshut to Plattling must use the buses used, although they do not have to miss out on hourly travel options.

In addition, a Infomobile will tour along the route from October 20th to inform travelers about all construction work and the traffic concept. After all, it is important that passengers are well informed and can plan their trips in good time.

The general renovation is necessary to ensure long-term stability and resilience of the route. In addition, the number of disruptions and delays should be noticeably reduced. With this measure, Deutsche Bahn has shown itself to have a good hand at securing the future of rail transport in the region.
