Violence against police in Upper Palatinate: cases are falling, injuries are rising!

There is a serious report of violence against police officers in Upper Palatinate. According to the current presentation of the Bavarian Situation Report 2024, which was published on June 25, 2025, 625 cases of violence against police officers were registered last year. This is a slight decrease compared to 2023, when 650 incidents were recorded. As encouraging as this sounds, there are also worrying developments that need to be addressed.

While the total number of violent cases fell, the number of police officers injured rose to 1,561, 62 more than the previous year. Particularly noticeable are the 251 officers who sustained minor injuries and one officer who was seriously injured. Police Chief Thomas Schöniger expressed concern about the incidents and emphasized that each case was one too many. Despite the 4.2 percent decrease in injuries, we must take the increasing number of physical attacks seriously, as *oberpfalzecho.de* notes.

Details of the incidents

The distribution of crimes and the types of attacks on police officers in the Upper Palatinate show the following numbers: 217 physical attacks on law enforcement officers, 195 cases of insults, usually slander and slander, 113 cases of resistance against law enforcement officers, 36 threats and 64 other crimes. *Statista* points out that this violence against police officers in Germany shows a continuing trend in the period from 2014 to 2023.

A particularly high proportion of registered suspects – over 75 percent – are male. What is astonishing is that more than half of these suspects were under the influence of intoxicants, primarily alcohol. This suggests that not only the social climate but also the influence of substances plays a role in these incidents. The fight against these acts of violence takes place in close cooperation between the public prosecutor's office and the police, with 23 cases being dealt with expeditedly in 2024.

Regional distribution

A look at the regional distribution of cases shows that the city of Regensburg is the most affected with 200 reported incidents, followed by the Schwandorf district with 100 cases. Further case numbers from the larger cities and districts of Upper Palatinate are:

District of Neumarkt i.d.Opf. 50
District of Neustadt a.d.W. 34

Especially in view of these figures, it is to be hoped that the measures to combat violence will be fruitful and that the situation will not only remain stable but will improve in the coming years. Supporting and protecting our emergency services must be a social task that we should tackle together. So the time is ripe to pull together!
