Cycling accidents in Neumarkt: Alarming increase in serious falls!

Yesterday evening, July 10, 2025, there were several bicycle accidents along the B299 near Berching and in the Neumarkt area that attracted the attention of the police. The investigation shows that not only the accidents themselves, but also the causes behind them are worrying.

The first accident occurred when a 72-year-old cyclist fell alone on the way from Berching to Beilngries. He suffered serious injuries and had to be taken to the hospital. Around 1,000 euros worth of damage was caused to his bike. A short time later, a 25-year-old cyclist also fell on the same bike path without any external influence and had to be taken to hospital with a minor head injury. The most dangerous, however, was the fall of a 33-year-old cyclist who fell over the handlebars of his bike due to a dropped drinking bottle and was flown to hospital by rescue helicopter with serious injuries, while the damage to the bike was around 100 euros.

The problem of accidents

Cyclists in Germany are increasingly having accidents without the involvement of other road users. According to a study by insurers' accident research (UDV), weather and infrastructure are common causes of accidents. In 2023, 27,400 cyclists in Germany alone suffered an accident without anyone else involved - 6,400 of them were seriously injured and 147 were even fatal. These alarming numbers increase, especially in the winter months, when slippery and poor weather conditions increase the risk of accidents. daily news reports that around one in three solo accidents can be attributed to inadequate infrastructure, the common cause of accidents among cyclists.

In addition, a 30-year-old cyclist was registered on Mussinanstrasse in Neumarkt who collided with the car of a 73-year-old while driving on the wrong side. Here too, the result was minor injuries to the cyclist and minor property damage. Another example of carelessness in road traffic was an incident on the Main-Danube Canal in which a 17-year-old cyclist, distracted by his cell phone, overlooked a 73-year-old pedestrian, who suffered minor injuries.

The role of infrastructure

Studies show that almost 32 percent of serious accidents occur in places where bike paths could significantly increase safety. The UDV calls for a decisive improvement in cycle paths and safety standards in order to minimize such accidents. Safe infrastructure is essential, especially for older cyclists, who, according to the UDV, are making their way out more and more frequently.

A look at the statistics also shows that collisions between a bike and a car have the most serious consequences in 41 percent of cases, with drivers mostly causing the accidents. This makes the need to raise awareness among drivers and cyclists and to create safer crossings and better marking of cycle paths all the more urgent.

The situation is no different in Neumarkt. An 18-year-old novice driver caused damage to a parked Opel while pulling out of a parking space and committed a traffic accident. Thanks to attentive witnesses, he was quickly identified. This shows once again how important it is to take responsibility in road traffic.

An e-scooter was also stolen on Hans-Dehn-Straße in Neumarkt, further increasing the insecurity on the streets. The police are asking for information about the black e-scooter worth 250 euros by calling 09181 / 4885-0.

Recent events are a call for caution – for both cyclists and drivers. Both sides are required to increase road safety and prevent accidents. Only by working together can we make the streets safer.
