Anniversary concert: Choral Society Nürnberg-Doos inspires with Peace of God
What a festive evening in Nuremberg! The Nürnberg-Doos 1855 e.V. choir recently celebrated its 170th anniversary and organized a very special concert in the Trinity Church under the motto “Peace of God”. The choir, which is one of the oldest choirs in Bavaria, was founded in 1855 as a men's choir and has changed significantly over the years. Today, over 50 active singers of all ages, organized in the voices of soprano, alto, tenor and bass, are looking forward to taking to the stage. The choir, directed by Florian Grieshammer, has developed into a modern ensemble and delights its audience with a wide repertoire from classical choral movements to rock and pop songs.
The anniversary concert itself was a highlight not only musically but also emotionally. Mendelssohn's “Give Us Peace” opened the evening and created a quiet, thoughtful atmosphere. Andreas König on the organ set another musical accent with Mendelssohn's Sixth Organ Sonata. The focus was Gretchaninoff's Missa festiva, a work that enchanted visitors with its late romantic sonority. Gretchaninoff's choice of music also sent a sign of reconciliation - an underlined desire for peace that was also expressed in John Rutter's closing piece "The Peace of God".
Tradition meets modernity
The singing club has a long history and is a founding member of the Franconian Singers' Association, which was founded in 1862 with 127 member clubs. When it was founded, singing was only reserved for men; it was not until 1933 that the men's choir was converted into a mixed choir, with men and women still rehearsing separately to this day. This is an example of how the choral landscape in Germany has changed over the years. This is also discussed in the book “Choral Singing in Germany”, which highlights historical developments and the current situation of choral singing. In this context, the rapid growth of men's choirs and the later emergence of mixed choirs are discussed.
The concert was rewarded with long-lasting applause, which demonstrated the audience's appreciation for the performances. The successful combination of the architecture of the “Culture Church GOHO” and the artistic design of Younghun Lee, who created three figures in the choir room, did the rest to give this event a special touch.
Insight into club life
The Nürnberg-Doos singing club performs on various occasions, be it at summer serenades, district festivals or Christmas concerts. In addition, we actively participate in church services. The choir tradition is very important to the association, and as a non-profit organization it welcomes donations for which a tax-deductible receipt can be issued. Anyone who is interested can stop by the next concert in the Church of the Redeemer on December 13, 2025 at 5:00 p.m. Entry is free!
For music lovers and anyone who would like to learn more about the tradition of choral singing, the book “Choral Singing in Germany” is ideal, which offers numerous insights into developments and current challenges.
The impressive anniversary celebration shows once again that choral singing is a living art form that combines tradition and modernity. We are looking forward to the next events and the musical highlights that the Nürnberg-Doos choir will offer in the future.
