Strong wind and fresh snow: Bavaria is preparing for storms!
A wild period of weather is coming up in Bavaria today. How stern.de Reportedly, heavy rain and snow showers are moving across the country as cooling from a low pressure complex descends on Scandinavia. In the mountains, especially at altitudes above 1,000 meters, people have to be prepared for thick fresh snow. The German Weather Service (DWD) expects up to 20 centimeters of fresh snow in the low mountain ranges and up to 40 centimeters in the Allgäu high mountains.
As the current forecasts show, it often remains rainy in the lowlands, especially in the Oberallgäu and the Bavarian Forest. Rainfall amounts of up to 50 liters per square meter are expected there within 18 to 24 hours. Whether in the valley or in the mountains, a strong to stormy wind blows from southwest to western directions with gusts of 60 to 80 km/h, in high-altitude regions it can even be up to 100 km/h. The weather conditions are not only uncomfortable, but can also be dangerous.
Snow in the mountains and rain in the lowlands
The temperatures in Bavaria are between 5 and 11 degrees, with the coldest values being found primarily in the Alps and the Bavarian Forest. Further deterioration in the weather is expected for Tuesday, although thunderstorms with sleet cannot be ruled out. However, the weather situation will clear up by the evening, especially in the Alps and in the foothills, where temperatures could climb between 8 and 14 degrees.
In the north the cloud cover will become thicker on Wednesday night and the rain will continue, while in southern Bavaria the sun is already breaking through. This increases the chances of slightly friendlier weather for those looking to recover from the storm damage or just want to stay dry.
Expected weather developments
Wednesday will start off unpleasantly, especially in the northern part with lots of clouds and a few drops, while south of the Danube the sun will appear. The maximum temperatures will be surprisingly mild, varying between 10 degrees in the Fichtelgebirge and 17 degrees in the foothills of the Alps. A relaxed wind blows from the south, which may feel like a small ray of hope after the stormy days.
A further temperature increase of a maximum of 12 to 17 degrees is expected on Thursday. The weather outlook is mixed: While the early part of the day starts out very cloudy and brings local rain in parts of Bavaria, the sun can bring similar relief in the afternoon.
Overall, the weather situation is unstable and changeable, making it difficult to make long-term plans. All in all, it is advisable to pay attention to the current weather warnings and, if necessary, to forego your usual leisure activities.
