Lemonade test: Only a few are convincing, sugar remains the big problem!
“Lemonade”, the refreshing drink for hot days, often offers more than just sparkling enjoyment. But what about the quality? Stiftung Warentest recently examined 29 lemonades and presented an exciting result. 74% of the lemonades tested received very good or good grades. But not everyone can be happy about praise, because three products only received an overall grade of “good”, while a whopping 23 lemonades were rated “satisfactory”. Only three scored “adequately”. The main cause of the devaluation is the excessive sugar content that can be found in many lemonades, as mainpost.de reports.
If you take a closer look at the lemonades, you will find that 21 products without sweeteners contain between 7 and 9 grams of sugar per 100 milliliters. For comparison: That's about as much as in apple spritzer, but definitely less than in cola. Interestingly, eight lemonades with sweeteners were also tested, and their intense taste was not consistently well received. Critics complain that sweeteners tend to alter the taste sensation and are not particularly environmentally friendly.
Popular varieties and test results
The testers were able to discover some taste surprises: six lemonades were rated “very good” and among them are real hits such as the “Fritz Limo Orange”, “Bad Brambach Garden Lemonade Lemon” and “Granini Die Limo Limette-Zitrone”. All of these products achieved a dream grade of 1.0 in the taste test. For the testers, the test winner – the “Fritz Limo Orange” – in combination with “Lidl Freeway Orange” and “Vio Bio Limo Orange” gave a good overall rating of 2.5. For just a few marks, Cologne residents can get their hands on some high-class refreshment!
- „Fritz Limo Orange“ (1,0)
- „Bad Brambacher Garten-Limonade Zitrone“ (1,0)
- „Granini Die Limo Limette-Zitrone“ (1,0)
- „Lemonaid Limette“ (1,0)
- „Vio Bio Limo Orange“ (1,5)
- „Sanpellegrino Naturali Limonata Zitrone“ (1,5)
The test results clearly show that lemonade should be handled carefully. Consumers should keep in mind that the sweet refreshments should be viewed as a treat rather than a thirst quencher. According to test.de, many lemonades are over-sweetened or, if they are sweetened with sweeteners, often too sweet. The experts therefore advise choosing the amount of sugar carefully, especially since some products were even contaminated with chlorate.
A note for conscious connoisseurs
If you rely on organic lemonades, this is a good choice: These are usually only sweetened with sugar, as sweeteners are not allowed in these products. It remains to be hoped that manufacturers will pay more attention to improving the taste composition and reducing the sugar content in their recipes. Ultimately, it is important to take care of your own health, but enjoyment should not be neglected. It's important to find the right balance and choose well!
Overall, Stiftung Warentest draws a differentiated conclusion: While the sweet temptations are definitely delicious, you shouldn't lose sight of your own sugar intake. A cool drink as a reward after a long day is certainly a good deal, but whether this should be poured into liters every day is the real question that everyone can now ask themselves.
