Construction work brings rail traffic in Bavaria to a standstill!

It looks like the trip to Austria this summer won't be quite as relaxed as usual. Deutsche Bahn has announced extensive construction work that will affect the popular railway lines towards the Alpine region. From August 1st to 18th, the routes between Rosenheim and Salzburg as well as Rosenheim and Kufstein are on the list - a real bottleneck for travelers, especially at the start of the holiday in Bavaria.

If you think you'll get to the holiday destination by train, you should have a little flexibility in your travel plan. The construction work involves replacing rails and overhead lines, which leads to significant restrictions on regional and long-distance trains. The Bavarian Regiobahn (BRB) is using replacement buses, but these will increase travel time and disrupt travel planning. Travelers are well advised to stay on the BRB website to be informed in good time about the replacement timetables.

Long-distance transport under pressure

In long-distance traffic, the restrictions go even further: trains on the route to Vienna will be redirected mainly via Passau until August 11th, which could also result in the establishment of additional stops. But that's not all: from August 11th, travelers will have to do without the popular connections between Munich and Italian cities such as Venice and Bologna, as these will be canceled completely. This is certainly a downer in the joy of traveling.

Long-term renovation planned

DB is not implementing these measures without reason. The track systems on the affected routes are overloaded and prone to errors, which not only leads to delays but also to unreasonable travel comfort. In order to improve the situation in the long term, the DB is planning a comprehensive general renovation of the railway lines between Munich-Rosenheim and Rosenheim-Salzburg by 2027. The aim of this renovation work is to increase the reliability of the railway and guarantee punctuality and fewer disruptions.

These comprehensive measures are part of the overall program to renovate infrastructure, railway operations and profitability that DB has initiated. The numbers speak for themselves: by 2027, infrastructural delays should be reduced by 20% and punctuality in long-distance transport increased to 75 to 80%. A challenge, but also a great opportunity for the future of rail travel in Germany, according to Richard Lutz, CEO of Deutsche Bahn, who emphasizes the need for these renovations due to the dilapidated infrastructure.

Overall, travelers should have a certain amount of patience when traveling by train in the coming weeks. Whether you prefer traffic jams on the roads or changes to rail traffic is up to you - but what is certain is that those responsible are doing everything they can to get rail operations up and running again soon and to make traveling by rail more comfortable.
