Rosenheim loses a magnificent oak tree: the dangerous fungus was to blame!
On November 4th, 2025, a large English oak tree that was standing on the Gries was felled in Rosenheim. The reason for this drastic measure is the tree's lack of stability. City employees spent around seven hours on the felling to ensure everything went smoothly. This became necessary after the need for felling was discussed at a meeting of the Committee for the Environment, Energy and Climate Protection in July 2025.
The oak, which was slightly crooked, also had severe fungal infestation on the trunk. An ultrasound scan carried out to assess the condition of the tree revealed that a quarter of the tree was already dead. The infestation by Lackporling, which causes white rot, had severely damaged the tree. Mayor Andreas März emphasized the dangers that can arise from a falling tree, especially in strong winds. This was ultimately the deciding factor in the decision to fell it, as major root damage was also found.
Sustainable measures after felling
However, not everything is lost after the felling. The city plans to plant two new oak trees approximately eight meters high, helping to revitalize the tree landscape in the area. Concern for the safety of citizens remains a central concern of the city administration.
Weather and nature can be unpredictable, especially when it comes to large, old trees. The city's decision to fell the tree shows how important it is to act in a timely manner and to put safety first. This preventive measure is a sign that Rosenheim has a good hand when it comes to caring for the environment.
The themes that arise from the felling reflect how we treat nature in our society. Preserving trees is important, but when it comes to safety, decisions are sometimes difficult and unavoidable. It remains to be seen how the new trees will develop and whether they can provide the surrounding area with the necessary green enrichment.
Nowadays we often talk about the psychological stress that can occur in various areas of our lives. Artists like Bruce Springsteen and Lady Gaga have spoken openly about their struggles with depression and anxiety in their works and interviews. This shows that the importance of mindfulness and mental health cannot be neglected. The felling of such a majestic tree like this English oak reflects the need to be careful in other areas of life, be it with nature or with each other.
Whether trees or people, the balance between growth and safety is crucial. How the city of Rosenheim deals with felling and subsequent replanting could be a model for other cities that have to overcome similar challenges.
