Kunterbunt opens in Gmünd: toys and fashion without plastic!
On Friday, October 31st, Astrid Scasny opened her new shop “Kunterbunt” at Bocksgasse 12 in Schwäbisch Gmünd. The committed entrepreneur is determined to attract attention with her range of high-quality children's clothing and toys. She relies on sustainability because plastic goods will not be found in her store. Instead, she chose wooden toys from the Netherlands and Denmark, which are not only environmentally friendly but also stimulate children's creativity.
“Children don’t need much to be able to play creatively,” emphasizes Scasny, summing up her philosophy. The idea of opening her own business matured during her time at the Böttinger toy store in Schwäbisch Gmünd, where she regularly helped on Wednesday afternoons. After the Böttinger closed, it was clear to her: “Now is the right time for my own project.”
Opening with many highlights
Scasny looked for the right space for over a year and finally found the former rooms of Ingrid Wolf's Choserie. With a lot of dedication and a clear goal in mind, she and her family redesigned her new business card in the city. Not only does she warmly invite you to the opening, but she is also planning a champagne reception with delicious appetizers and a surprise for the little guests.
“I’m really looking forward to meeting children, parents and all other visitors,” beams the entrepreneur. With her concept, Scasny falls right at the heart of the updated toy industry, which has become a crucial sector of the economy in recent years. According to Statista, the industry's sales in 2024 were almost 119 billion US dollars.
Toys through the ages
In Germany, however, there are some less encouraging trends: in 2024, sales fell to 4.4 billion euros, which is above the level before the pandemic, but cannot reach the good year during the corona pandemic. Innovative business models and sustainable products like those established by Scasny could help get the industry back on track.
With big names like LEGO, the toy manufacturer with the highest sales in the world, and Ravensburger, which is well placed in Germany, the industry is looking forward to an exciting future. Ravensburger alone achieved record sales of around 790 million euros in 2024. Scasny could bring a breath of fresh air to this industry with her approach to the Bocksgasse.
In summary, it can be said that “Kunterbunt” is a promising place to go for creative and sustainably produced toys in Schwäbisch Gmünd. Friday's opening could be the start of a new era of less plastic-heavy and more environmentally friendly toys. And that's something to really look forward to!
