Rescue operation on Hochstaufen: Mountain rescue rescues exhausted hikers
On June 22, 2025, there was a dramatic rescue operation on the Hochstaufen-Goldtropfsteig in Bad Reichenhall. Two men aged 24 and 26 from Romania lost their footing on the narrow path and were forced to call emergency services. Details of this incident reported Mercury.
The two men had climbed over the Bartlmahd and planned to return to the valley via the Goldtropfsteig. At around 3:15 p.m. they called the emergency number after losing the path on a steep rubble gully below a broken wall. The rescue workers from the Bad Reichenhall and Freilassing mountain rescue services as well as the rescue helicopter “Christoph 14” were alerted immediately.
Fight against exhaustion
The helicopter had previously been used in another operation in Berchtesgaden. Thanks to the quick response, two mountain rescuers were picked up at the Reichenhall district clinic and hoisted down to the stranded hikers. The men were then freed from their predicament in two approaches and flown into the valley. The entire operation lasted until around 4:45 p.m.
It was not the first incident of this kind on the Goldtropfsteig, which is proving increasingly dangerous due to its popularity as an Alpine hiking route. Loud Freilassing mountain rescue service The number of missions has increased significantly in recent years since the trail became available in hiking apps. In the past, such missions were the exception; Now the mountain rescuers have to go out more and more frequently.
Rise in criticism
Another example happened just before: On August 24th, rescue workers had to treat a 57-year-old woman who was seriously injured on the Mulisteig. Here, too, the mountain rescue service was required with several emergency teams, and the operation lasted until 3:15 p.m. This accumulation of operations raises questions about safety on the Goldtropfsteig, which is no longer maintained and was previously only climbed by experienced mountaineers.
Due to the changed use, the mountain rescue service is calling for a rethink regarding the safety and preservation of such climbs. The increasing number of hikers and the emergencies seen make it clear that something is wrong. One can only hope that the necessary measures are implemented quickly so that the beauty of nature can continue to be enjoyed safely in the future.
