Memmingen remains a fair trade city: a successful model for sustainability!
There is reason to be happy in Memmingen: the city has once again been recognized as a “Fairtrade City”. This title, which was awarded for the first time in 2021 by Fairtrade Deutschland e.V., has now been extended for a further two years. Mayor Jan Rothenbacher underscored the significance of this award and emphasized the importance of leading by example to make a positive difference both globally and locally. “Think globally, act locally” is the motto that the city and its citizens live with pride.
But what exactly makes a city a Fairtrade city? Memmingen meets all the criteria of the Fairtrade Town campaign, which aims to promote fair trading practices. It's not just about products like the popular Memminger coffee and delicious chocolates, but also about a variety of initiatives that take place during Fair Week. In addition, Fairtrade sports balls are distributed to students, which shows how the commitment to fair conditions and sustainable development is carried into schools in Memmingen.
Fairtrade – a global movement
The Fairtrade movement has been established for over 30 years and fights for farmers and workers worldwide to have better living and working conditions. The aim is to promote fair treatment of producers, which not only helps those affected, but ultimately society as a whole. According to Fairtrade, over 820 cities in Germany are certified as Fairtrade Towns, and more than 2,000 cities in 36 countries worldwide belong to this network.
Fairtrade has established itself as a leader in global trade, not only supporting the companies that offer fair products, but also calling on governments to strengthen fair trade. Farmers and workers are helped to establish a direct connection with consumers, so that the fairly produced coffee and chocolate are not only delicious, but also enable conscious purchasing decisions.
Memmingen is therefore not just an example of local action, but part of a larger global commitment to sustainable trade and fair living conditions.
