Reactivation of the Fuchstalbahn? Good news for commuters!

The long-disused railway line between Schongau and Landsberg am Lech could soon be revived. After more than 40 years of standstill, there are efforts to reactivate regional trains on this single-track and non-electrified route. A current report from the Bavarian Railway Company (BEG) says that there are good chances for a revival, but some conditions must be met for this to happen. Those involved on site attach great importance to hourly train services, which means that sufficient passenger demand is predicted. However, it is essential to create a suitable bus service to the train stops, as reported in [rosenheim24.de](https://www.rosenheim24.de/bayern/landsberg-schongau-bahnwege-soll-wieder-aktiviert- Werden-94026505.html).

The districts of Weilheim-Schongau and Landsberg am Lech have been pursuing the goal of resuming regional traffic on this route for several years. The report on the Fuchstalbahn exceeds the existing Bavaria-wide requirements in terms of forecast demand. Another positive aspect: Interest in the connection could increase as a result of the Germany ticket still being available. However, financing the necessary repair work represents the biggest hurdle, as this must take place without any costs for the Free State of Bavaria.

Bus routes and financing

In order to reactivate the Fuchstalbahn, the districts have to set up new bus routes as feeders to the train stations, which requires additional funds. Only when all conditions are met will Bavaria reach into its pocket and provide financing for train operations. An operating company would then have to be commissioned. The infrastructure company DB InfraGO is also in demand as it would have to take over the operational readiness of the route.

A general trend in Bavaria shows that it is time to expand rail transport again. The BEG plans, finances and monitors local rail passenger transport on behalf of the Ministry of Transport and, with the report on the Fuchstalbahn, is now one of the nine Bavarian railway lines that have potential for reactivation. It is also interesting that the publication of the report has been delayed until summer 2024, which could trigger further discussions about regional connections.

Public transport for students

The need for well-developed public transport is particularly evident among young people. In Bavaria, school students and trainees can continue to use buses and trains for 365 euros per year. The cabinet has decided to extend this ticket until July 31, 2026, which provides an important basis for planning for many young people. Around 360,000 young people are currently using such a ticket, which has been helping to support regular trips to school or training since its introduction in 2020. The ticket offer is valid in several transport associations, such as in Munich and Nuremberg, and is two-thirds financed by the Free State of Bavaria.

The extension of the 365 euro annual ticket creates security for the 2025/2026 school year, regardless of the continued existence of the Germany ticket. This currently costs 58 euros per month and allows travel on local transport nationwide. In Bavaria there is even a reduced version of the Deutschlandticket for students and trainees, which only costs 38 euros. This ensures that many students' journey to school remains financially viable.
