Tragic accident on B19: wrong-way driver (65) dies, several injured!

A tragic traffic accident on Federal Highway 19 on Saturday evening caused great consternation in the region. At around 7:10 p.m., a 65-year-old driver of a gray VW Golf drove the wrong way towards Würzburg. This led to a serious collision in which the man unfortunately died at the scene. The accident occurred when he collided head-on with an oncoming blue Audi. As a result, his vehicle also crashed into a white BMW, causing the VW Golf to end up on its roof.

A total of four cars were involved in the serious accident. The driver of the BMW, a 26-year-old man, was seriously injured and had to be freed by the fire department. A 74-year-old Audi driver suffered moderate injuries, while the 41-year-old driver of a VW Touran escaped with minor injuries. First aid measures were initiated by passersby, but could not prevent the worst. The Würzburg city police took over the further investigation, while an expert was called in to clarify the exact causes of the accident. The B19 was closed in the direction of the city for several hours while the accident was being recorded.

A look at road safety

Unfortunately, such tragic incidents are not isolated cases. In 2024, there were around 2.5 million road traffic accidents in Germany, which represents a decrease compared to the previous year. But the number of accidents resulting in personal injuries remains at a level that has long been alarming. One goal pursued by the EU transport ministers is “Vision Zero”, according to which there should be no more traffic deaths by 2050. However, this goal is repeatedly jeopardized by human factors such as inattention and recklessness.

Statistics show that traffic deaths in Germany fell from 19,193 in 1970 to 2,770 in 2024. Nevertheless, the downward trend has stalled in recent years. The causes of accidents are varied; Insufficient distance, improper speed and driving under the influence of alcohol are among the most common reasons for accidents resulting in personal injuries. In 2024, 40% of alcohol-related accidents resulted in injuries and deaths.

Attentive road users are required

The police recently called for people not to take photos of accident scenes in order not to further incriminate those affected and their relatives. This comes as part of their efforts to also raise awareness about road safety. It has also been noted that accidents involving e-bikes and e-scooters are increasing, which requires increased attention from all road users.

The current situation on the streets makes it clear that we must all strive for responsible coexistence. Anyone who witnesses a dangerous incident or feels affected is asked to call 0931/457 – 2210. Only together can we help increase road safety and prevent tragic accidents like this one.
