Traffic chaos on the A7: Residents fight against noise and traffic jams!

There is currently real traffic chaos on the A7 towards Würzburg, especially at the construction site at the Römershag bridge. How Fulda newspaper reported, the single-lane roadway caused by the construction site repeatedly leads to traffic jams that extend as far as Hesse and also put a lot of strain on the neighboring towns. Especially in Rothemann, where the daily traffic volume is normally around 12,000 vehicles, the number doubles due to the diversions to up to 20,000 cars and around 4,000 trucks.

The construction site is part of extensive work on the 55-year-old bridge, which is in poor condition. Demolition work has already begun and is expected to be completed by 2028, after which the road will become two lanes again. However, this causes considerable inconvenience: residents of the surrounding communities, including Schmalnau and Ebersburg, complain about increased noise and difficulty turning onto the busy main road, which is particularly problematic during rush hours.

Challenges for residents

How East Hesse News reported, the confusing traffic situation has led to several rear-end collisions being recorded. Resident Christoph Helfbernd reports great difficulty getting safely onto the busy street, while other residents use signs to draw attention to their dissatisfaction. They demand: “Less noise – clean air” and “Less traffic: more safety for our children!”

The mayors of the affected communities, such as Ebersburg's Mayor Benjamin Reinhart, have also recognized the problem and are discussing measures. In Schmalnau, a 30 km/h zone is repeatedly mentioned, but this was rejected due to a lack of requirements. Although there is an existing traffic regulation for trucks with a speed limit of 3.5 tons at night, many residents are calling for additional traffic calming measures.

Necessary construction site management

Considering the difficulties caused by the construction site, efficient construction site management is of utmost importance. This was stated in a report by CIVITAS highlighted. Good planning and communication are crucial to minimize delays and minimize disruption to residents and road users. Challenges lie not only in the coordination between authorities and construction companies, but also in the public use of information systems that should ensure transparency during the construction phase.

The current traffic situation impressively shows how important such integrated management is. The city administration and construction companies are required to find a solution that meets both the infrastructure and the needs of local residents. However, citizens' patience will likely continue to be tested given the construction period until 2028.

With the hope of an early improvement, a certain degree of unrest remains in the affected communities. It remains to be seen how the announced discussions about speed limits and possible additional traffic calming measures will be implemented.
