Würzburg Baskets fail again: clear defeat in Heidelberg!
Once again the Fitness First Würzburg Baskets failed to win away from home. In the third away game within a week they clearly lost to MLP Academics Heidelberg 85:51. The game took place in the SNP dome in front of almost 4,000 spectators, who probably expected more from their team.
Würzburg was already behind 44:34 at halftime. A real mood killer because the Baskets simply couldn't pull themselves together. With a high error rate of 25 ball losses and a miserable 15 percent of three-point attempts (only 3 out of 20 were successful), the basis for success simply wasn't there. The best throwers for Würzburg were Davion Mintz with 12 points and Marcus Carr and Charles Thompson, who each contributed 11 points.
Heidelberg is taking action
The academics from Heidelberg, on the other hand, were really motivated. They not only had the aggressive defense under control, but also a balanced team performance. Dusan Neskovic and Michael Weathers were the top performers with 14 points each, while Osun Osunniyi and Samuell Williamson also made strong contributions. Compared to Würzburg, they only lost the ball 14 times.
The loss of Alen Pjanic, who was unable to play due to an injury to his throwing hand, was a bitter setback for the Würzburg Baskets. The comments after the game reflected the disappointment: Charles Thompson complained about a lack of energy, commitment and concentration, while coach Sasa Filipovski saw the long journeys as a possible reason for the poor performance. On the Heidelberg side, coach Danny Jansson was convinced that teamwork and good defense were crucial to the victory.
A look at the future
There are now important games on the program for Würzburg: On October 31st they will face Science City Jena, followed by a meeting with Galatasaray Istanbul on November 4th and the Rostock Seawolves on November 9th. The team urgently needs to find its form because the results so far cannot be ignored.
Basketball is becoming increasingly popular in Germany. In the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL), the average attendance has risen to 4,836 per game, reflecting the passion of the fans. In addition, the German national team has developed significantly in recent years and now plays in the top 3 of the FIBA world rankings. The DBB recorded an increase in members of 219,521 in 2024, which shows that the sport is booming and exciting many people.
The coming weeks will show whether the Würzburg Baskets can turn things around. It will be exciting to see how the situation develops and whether the team learns from its mistakes. As Sasa Filipovski said, this defeat must be quickly forgotten in order to gain new energy for the challenges.
