New Eger cycle path: 55 kilometers of nature experience in the Fichtelgebirge!
The opening of the new one Eger cycle path in the picturesqueFichtel Mountainsis on everyone's lips. Since September 22, 2025, cyclists have been able to tackle the approximately 55-kilometer route, which leads from the source of the Eger on the northwest slope of the Schneeberg to the border town of Schirnding. This newly designed route is not only an enrichment for the region, but also a wonderful opportunity to experience nature up close.
The Eger, which has its origins here, stretches for more than 300 kilometers until it flows into the Elbe. With a wide range of rest areas, dining options and overnight accommodation along the route, the new cycle path ensures a comprehensive experience. The route was supported by several municipalities and the Wunsiedel district and includes the towns of Bad Weißenstadt, Röslau, Marktleuthen, Thierstein, Selb, Hohenberg an der Eger and Schirnding. The total cost of the project was 12.5 million euros, two thirds of which were covered by funding.
Tourist attractions and nature experiences
The official opening left nothing to be desired: a church service, guided bike tours and numerous hands-on activities attracted many visitors. During the ride, cyclists can discover numerous sights, including Lake Weißenstädter See, the Kaiserhammer hunting lodge and the Porcelain Museum in Hohenberg. The “Zwölf-Gipfel-Blick” viewpoint near Röslau in particular offers wonderful panoramas.
Another highlight is the source of the Eger, which has been known for its health-promoting medicinal water since 1600. Along the route there is not only the opportunity to take a break, but also to enjoy the surrounding unspoiled nature of the Fichtelgebirge. The route leads through natural valley sections and offers some rapid descents as well as shady forest stretches.
Connection to the Czech Republic and European cycle paths
The Eger cycle path ends at the Czech border in Schirnding. This joins the existing hiking trail in the Czech Republic, which extends another 200 kilometers to Litoměřice. This connection is also seen as a significant part of European cycling. From the Egerquelle via Pomezí nad Ohří, Cheb and Loket to Karlovy Vary, cyclists are guided through a varied and culturally enriching landscape.
The region is well prepared for cyclists. Numerous ADFC-certified restaurateurs and overnight accommodations along the route contribute to the high quality of life with their offerings and make the Eger cycle path a real gem in the Fichtelgebirge.
