Premiere of Der Freischütz” thrills Wunsiedel – endless applause!
On Friday evening the time had finally come: the premiere of Carl Maria von Weber's “Der Freischütz” took place in the picturesque Wunsiedel. This production, performed by the Landesbühnen Sachsen, captivated the audience and resulted in shouts of Bravo and long-lasting final applause. The ensemble from Radebeul is supported by the Elbland Philharmonic Orchestra of Saxony, under the sensitive direction of Hans-Peter Preu. An evening that shows how lively classical music can be even in the 21st century.
The performance is part of the Luisenburg Festival in summer 2025 and offers an exciting insight into German opera history. The film is directed by Manuel Schöbel, who reinterprets the famous plot with his creative vision. In “Der Freischütz” we get to know Max, a young hunter who does everything in his power to propose to his true love, Agathe. But the road there is rocky. Max has to prove his hunting skills, but fate doesn't seem to be kind to him. In desperation, he makes a pact with evil - a turning point in history.
A classic experiences new life
“Der Freischütz” is considered the best-known work by Carl Maria von Weber and is one of the most respected German operas. It premiered in Berlin in 1821 and has since captured countless hearts. Particularly exciting is the legend of the pact with the devil, which is a central part of the opera and creates the dark atmosphere. But don't worry, the story has a positive ending: Max is banished for a year, but both he and Agathe find happiness in the end. Scenes such as the landlady drawing beer and toasting with tankards create a lively, convivial atmosphere that draws the audience into the action.
Carl Maria von Weber, born in 1786, was a composer whose works were written between 1798 and 1826 and had a lasting influence on German opera. He had a fine feeling for melodies and dramaturgy. His first major work, the opera “Silvana,” was performed in 1810 and was very well received. But with “Der Freischütz” he found his breakthrough and established himself as one of the most important composers of his time. The opera remains a popular repertoire piece in many opera houses worldwide.
The performance in Wunsiedel is not only a celebration of music, but also an impressive example of how traditional theater and modern production can go hand in hand. It remains to be seen how audiences will continue to react to the upcoming performances. One thing is clear: “Der Freischütz” captivates its audience not only through its gripping plot, but also through the musical skills of the actors and the ensemble of the Elbland Philharmonic Saxony.
For all those who missed the premiere: The performance will be played more times and it is worth making the journey to Wunsiedel to experience this fascinating piece of German cultural history for yourself.
