New Emojis 2025: Trombone, Treasure Chest and Bigfoot are coming!

On July 17, 2025, the worldwideWorld Emoji Daycelebrated, and this year the Unicode Consortium brings exciting news. The consortium that ensures text and emojis are displayed correctly worldwide has previewed the new emojis that will eventually enrich digital communications. These new additions are part of the Unicode 17.0 -Publication and include a colorful range of symbols:

  • Posaune
  • Schatztruhe
  • Verzerrtes Gesicht
  • Haariges Wesen (Bigfoot oder Sasquatch)
  • Kampfwolke
  • Apfelgriebs
  • Orca
  • Balletttänzer

Some of these emojis not only have visual appeal, but are also loaded with symbolic meanings that offer us new forms of expression in digital communication. Emojis have established themselves as a popular way to express thoughts and feelings, avoid misunderstandings, and add color to even the most sober text messages. According to a survey, an impressive 82 percent of respondents in Germany use emojis in their emails, chats and text messages, with 21 percent using them in every single message. Emojis are particularly popular among younger people: 75 percent of 16 to 29 year olds have already experienced that user-unfriendly communication led to misunderstandings.

A look into the future of emojis

After the new emojis have been introduced, the big manufacturers such as Apple, Google and Microsoft still have to get involved. They are required to integrate the new characters into their operating systems. This usually happens with the next major software updates, so users will be able to use the new emojis on their smartphones and other devices in just a few months. The introduction of new emojis is an annual event, and new characters are continually added to the Unicode Standard to meet the diverse needs of users.

“Emoji” are not just simple images – they are a real communication phenomenon that connects people across language and cultural boundaries. This form of communication originated in the late 1990s, when Japanese designer Shigetaka Kurita developed 176 pictograms for a mobile phone provider. Since then, the number of emojis has increased to a whopping 3,790 official variants, enriching the possibilities of expression in the digital world. Recent information about planned emojis, such as a shocked face or the orca, suggests that we can look forward to innovative designs that expand the spectrum of emoji communication even further.

Anyone who has creative ideas for new emojis can submit them online to the Unicode Consortium. The final decision as to which proposals will be included in the Unicode portfolio is made by the Unicode Technical Committee. These initiatives show how lively and changeable digital interaction is and offer everyone the chance to take part in shaping the digital language.

A real treat for all emoji lovers! The new icons will definitely enrich digital communication, and with the right integration everyone will soon be able to use a touch of Bigfoot or a treasure chest in their chats. Isn't it exciting how emojis will shape the language of the future?
