Swimming in the Bremerhaven Museum Harbor: Launch for Sail 2025 planned!

What's happening in Bremerhaven? Quite a lot, because the spatial desire for water is currently reflected in exciting plans. Swimming in the museum harbor could become a reality as soon as Sail in August 2025. But as anticipation builds, things aren't quite as simple as you might think. After all, a permanent swimming pool requires a whole series of bureaucratic approvals and coordination.

Open-air swimming in Bremerhaven is currently limited to the Grünhöfe outdoor pool. But when the weather is nice, it can quickly get quite crowded there. Swimming in the Weser lido is simply forbidden and the nearest swimming area is about ten kilometers away. The planned harbor swimming pool, which is to be located in the middle of the city center, could be a welcome change. This idea could make Bremerhaven another hotspot, as has already been seen in cities like Malmö or Aarhus.

Planning for the swimming pool

The new basin is intended for the museum harbor on the quay in front of the former Koggenbräu building. The city has already been able to rely on financial support from the state of Bremen to take the first steps such as building a pontoon or footbridge. However, there are still a few hurdles ahead: the operation of the pool would have to be financed through entrance fees, and safety precautions such as separating ropes and lifeguards are essential.

Before nothing stands in the way of swimming fun, four authorities - the health department, the environmental protection department, the water authority and the public order office - have to give their okay. In addition, the planned construction requires an adjustment of several legal regulations. An additional point that needs to be clearly regulated is potential liability in the event of accidents. Those responsible in Bremerhaven are thinking about setting up a “swimming club” to clarify these questionable questions.

Water quality and supervision

A positive aspect is that the water quality in the museum harbor is considered to be superior, as ship traffic is relatively low. Nevertheless, long-term water quality tests are necessary before jumping into the water. Interestingly, water skiing and wakeboarding are also offered in the museum harbor during the Sail, which entails the need for on-site supervision. A first test run for the swimming pool is planned for Sail 2025. If everything goes according to plan, the pool could open regularly in 2026.

Bremerhaven is not the only city that relies on the advantages of water areas. In many major German cities there are efforts to create natural pools. These baths are often biologically treated and contribute to sustainable urban development. It is a true renaissance for swimming in nature, which is also reflected in projects such as the Saale beach in Halle, which already serves as a resort. In Bremerhaven, the planned swimming pool in the harbor could be a similar success - an enrichment for the city and its citizens.

So you can see that when the water calls in Bremerhaven, it doesn't just have to do with leisure activities. This is an important step towards urban quality of life and sustainable urban development. Let's stay tuned to see how the plans develop!
