Gas storage in Germany: Fill level rises to 74.59% despite challenges!

In Germany, great importance continues to be placed on gas supply, and current figures show that gas storage facilities are at a solid level. According to the Allgäu newspaper The gas storage level is currently at 74.59% (as of September 12, 2025), which corresponds to an increase of 0.18% compared to the previous day. This development is positive news after months of steady increases: from 32.62% in May 2025, to 39.65% in June and 50.34% in July, to over 70% in early September.

There is remarkable data in the context of gas consumption in Germany. Gas consumption in 2024 is estimated at approximately 844 terawatt hours, an increase of 3.5% compared to last year. The distribution of consumption is also interesting: 39% goes to households and businesses, while 61% is used by industrial customers. Particularly cold winter months, such as December and January, are often the highest in gas consumption, whereas in summer, especially in July and August, energy requirements drop significantly.

Gas storage level and consumption

An important point is the current filling level of the gas storage, which is loud NDR At 75% on September 11, 2025, it is slightly above the average of previous years, but 10 percentage points lower than in the period from 2017 to 2021. On the one hand, this deviation is due to a colder winter and the high gas consumption in industry, which has risen sharply in the last few months.

Gas is stored in around 40 locations nationwide, with a total capacity of around 255 terawatt hours. Particularly noteworthy is the largest storage facility in Rehden, which is currently only 2% full. Nevertheless, the federal government remains optimistic and assures that the gas supply in Germany is stable and that no acute supply bottlenecks are to be expected. Imported gas deliveries now come mainly from Norway and the Netherlands, but are heavily dependent on previous years.

Continuity and security of gas supply

The many measures that have been taken in recent years to diversify the energy supply are bearing fruit. Since reducing gas imports from Russia - no deliveries have been made via Nord Stream since September 2022 - Germany has successfully found alternative ways to meet demand. Liquefied natural gas terminals, which have been operational since 2023, play a crucial role in this, even if they currently cover less than 10% of total demand.

Overall, it shows that Germany is well positioned with its approach to gas storage and supply. However, if there is a gas shortage, the federal government can declare the emergency level of the “Gas Emergency Plan” to protect protected customers such as households, schools and hospitals.

The situation remains exciting and shows once again how important it is to prepare for future challenges, especially in view of growing demand and the changing energy market. Fortunately, the conditions for surviving the coming winters are generally favorable, as is the case ZDF reported.
