A7 in Hamburg: Complete closure until Monday – traffic jams and diversions are imminent!

The A7 in Hamburg will be at a standstill until 5 a.m. Monday morning due to extensive work on the Schnelsen noise protection tunnel. This full closure came into force late on Friday evening and affects the section between the Hamburg-Schnelsen junction and the Hamburg-Nordwest triangle. The reason for the closure is the technical upgrade of the tunnel, which requires all computer components and associated software to be replaced after eight years of operation. This measure was described as unavoidable to ensure the safety and performance of the tunnel. In addition, there are already long traffic jams between Hamburg-Heimfeld and Schnelsen, which amount to around 15 kilometers. The current holiday season, in which nine federal states already have school holidays, represents an additional challenge, as NDR reports.

During the closure, a comprehensive diversion for travel via the A1, A21 and B205 is recommended. City traffic also has to be diverted to alternative routes. Traffic jams on these diversions are expected, particularly for traffic to the Port of Hamburg, which makes the situation more difficult for many commuters and travelers. For those traveling to the north, we recommend turning onto the A1 at the Horster triangle in the direction of Lübeck and then taking the A21 to Kiel and the B205 to the Neumünster-Süd junction. For those traveling south, an exit is planned at the Neumünster-Süd junction on the B205 and then the return journey via the A21 and the A1 towards Bremen, as ADAC adds.

Dates for future closures

However, this lockdown is not the only one coming in the near future. The A7, at 962 kilometers the longest motorway in Germany, is repeatedly slowed down by extensive construction work. The last full closure of the A7 took place at the beginning of July and also caused massive traffic jams in the city. Other planned closures for 2025 include:

  • 26.9. – 29.9. Elbtunnel, K20 und Tunnelleitzentrale
  • 17.10. – 20.10. Elbtunnel
  • 7.11. – 10.11. Hochstraße K20
  • 14.11. – 17.11. Tunnel Stellingen
  • 6.12. – 7.12. Hochstraße K20

The A7 is of central importance for traffic in and around Hamburg, as it connects Hamburg Airport with the port and the western and northern surrounding areas. Over 130,000 vehicles travel between Waltershof and Volkspark every day, which puts a significant strain on traffic on this important north-south connection, especially during construction work and route closures.

Information about traffic jams in Hamburg

In the city itself, traffic jams are an everyday phenomenon. Traffic management is influenced by various factors, including construction sites within Hamburg. A free traffic jam detector for the region always provides up-to-date information about traffic jams and disruptions within a radius of 15 kilometers. It is important that drivers are always informed and keep up to date with the current traffic situation, as can be found on stau.info. The routes covered by the traffic jam reports outline some of the busy motorways and federal roads in the area, including the A23, A24, A1 and A7.

These diversions and traffic information are particularly important for smooth operations and help both commuters and travelers to better adapt to the traffic situation. If you have any further questions about current traffic jams and construction work, it is advisable to regularly consult the relevant traffic reports.
