A7 and Elbe tunnel closed: traffic madness in Hamburg until Monday!
The current traffic conditions around Hamburg are difficult, especially for travelers heading south. The Autobahn 7 between Hamburg-Stellingen and Hamburg-Heimfeld has been closed since Friday evening, and this is expected to last until Monday morning at 5 a.m. This closure is due to the re-marking of the southbound lane, which is necessary as part of the expansion of the A7 to eight lanes. In addition, the Elbe Tunnel is also affected, which leads to even more traffic jams and slow traffic in and around Hamburg. Travelers should be prepared to be patient when traveling on the roads. According to the traffic control center, there is also slow traffic on the B4 and B75 roads, which does not help the situation.
What is particularly noticeable is that additional traffic delays are occurring downtown due to National Veterans Day. The travel time on the A1 between Hamburg-Billstedt and Hamburg-Stillhorn could be extended by more than an hour. For everyone traveling in the closed section, the traffic control center has signposted diversions via the B205, A21 and A1. Large-capacity and heavy-duty transports are also required to deviate widely.
More construction sites and closures
But that's not all - there has also been a closure on the A1 between Ahrensburg and the Bargteheide motorway junction since June 13th, which lasts until June 15th at 8 p.m. The reason? The construction of a new bridge over the A1. Last but not least, many entrances on the A7 are closed on the night of June 16th. Hamburg-Stellingen and other entrances such as Hamburg-Volkspark, Hamburg-Othmarschen and Hamburg-Bahrenfeld are affected.
For the period until April 3, 2027, there is also a construction site on the A7 towards Fulda between the Hattenbacher triangle and the Dornbusch rest area, where traffic routing is restricted. A lane on the route from Hanover towards Hamburg between the Dorfmark rest area and Soltau-Süd is also closed due to rescue work. Travelers should take these construction sites into account when planning their route.
Future traffic restrictions
Further full closures of the A7 are already planned after this weekend. The next closure will extend from July 4th to July 7th in both directions. All drivers should stay up to date with the sectional changes, as there are several closures in Hamburg every year. There have already been six full closures in 2024. A look into the future shows that the Schnelsen tunnels will be closed for technical work between July 18th and 21st and August 9th and 10th.
The highways are in constant change due to construction sites, traffic disruptions and weather conditions. However, with an interactive dashboard, anyone can easily access the current traffic situation on German motorways and see where the longest traffic jams are and how many construction sites currently exist. This enables a quick response to unforeseeable disruptions and helps to plan the trip efficiently. Monitoring the traffic situation is also crucial to ensure smooth traffic management. “NDR”, “Verkehrslage” and “Autobahn.de” always provide up-to-date information here further.
