Train chaos in Hamburg: cable damage causes massive disruption!

On the morning of October 16, 2025, Hamburg was simmering. Train traffic was severely affected and the reason was cable damage at Hamburg Central Station, which was caused by construction work between the main station and Altona. Deutsche Bahn stated that the repair work is still ongoing and the disruptions will continue until at least Thursday morning Deutschlandfunk reported.

In long-distance traffic, trains only ran every hour and all trains only ran to or from Hamburg-Harburg. Travelers from the south had to be prepared for their connections to end there. On the other hand, regional trains from the south could still pass through and reach the main station. The chaos was exacerbated by the fact that the switches could not be set correctly and it was not possible to get to the main station from the north, as was the case daily news informed.

Passengers have to adjust

For many travelers who wanted to go to Copenhagen, Vienna and Zurich, this meant significant changes. Local transport was also affected, but not the Hamburg S-Bahn. The federal police in Hamburg made it clear that there was no evidence of a crime, which at least provided some reassurance.

The situation reminded many of the disruptions that occurred the day before in the Cologne area due to a defective signal box. There, too, travelers had to contend with diverted and canceled trains, which made the situation more difficult for many commuters.

Traveler's checks recommended

It is advisable for everyone affected to take a look at the current information on bahn.de or use the DB Navigator before traveling. There you will find an interactive disruption map that shows the current traffic disruptions in the DB network, as well as real-time positions of trains and departure boards. Uphill travel is the motto in such times, and those who plan well will do good business, is the general motto.

Deutsche Bahn is therefore required to clean up the chaos as quickly as possible, while passengers should keep their nerve. Patience and up-to-date information are required in order to survive this disruption.
