Hedges and trees: pruning allowed again from October!

Even though autumn is approaching, there is important news for garden owners: since October 1st, hedges, bushes and trees in the area have been allowed to be cut again. This is regulated by the Federal Nature Conservation Act, which allows pruning until the end of February. Anyone who lends a hand now will contribute to maintaining biodiversity, as Lutz Köhler, the first district councilor for the Darmstadt-Dieburg district, emphasizes. Citizens are called upon to adhere to the established tree pruning times and to treat our nature with respect, as [Rhein Main Verlag](https://www.rheinmainverlag.de/2025/10/09/hecken-straeucher-und-baeume-ab-oktober-darf-wieder-schnitt- Werden/) reports.

But be careful: there is a strict closed season from March to September. During these months, radical pruning or removal of trees is prohibited to protect breeding birds and migrating bats. This regulation is anchored in Section 39 Paragraph 5 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act. Woody plants are a habitat for many animal species and their protection is therefore of utmost importance. Only gentle care and topiary cuts are permitted during this time as long as the animals are not disturbed, NABU Bergstrasse reports on its website.

Violations and possible fines

Anyone who violates these requirements must expect severe fines. If you are unsure, you are also asked to contact the Lower Nature Conservation Authority if you are simply interested. Advice by telephone is possible at 06151 / 881-2209 or by email at naturschutz@ladadi.de, as [Rhein Main Verlag](https://www.rheinmainverlag.de/2025/10/09/hecken-straeucher-und-baeume-ab-oktober-darf-wieder-schnitt- Werden/) recommends.

The ban on radically cutting trees between March and September applies not only to urban areas, but also to rural areas. It is important that citizens respect and preserve nature. The Federal Nature Conservation Act (BNatSchG) ensures that the rules for protecting wildlife and biodiversity are adhered to. In many regions, the preservation of hedges and other trees can be seen as a contribution to biodiversity, which also has a positive effect on our ecosystem, according to NABU Bergstrasse.

The role of nature conservation policy

In Germany there is an extensive system of regulations and laws that regulate nature conservation. This system is not only local, but also has connections to European and international standards, as the bpb explains. The goal is to control human behavior to protect natural habitats and to ensure that not only individuals but also entire populations are protected.

Biodiversity is not a stroke of luck, but requires our active actions. It is therefore important that all garden owners adhere to the applicable rules. In this way, together we can make a valuable contribution to preserving our nature and supporting the local wildlife. A little mindfulness can have a big impact!
